" VINCENT TAN REFUSES TO RULE OUT NAME CHANGE "

Thursday 15th August 2013.

Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan insists manager Malky Mackay must deliver after his summer of Premier League spending – while refusing to rule out a Hull City style name change in future.

Malaysian businessman Tan, who claims he's close to making the club debt free, says he expects to have spent more than £35m on players by the end of the summer transfer window but warns that will bring it's own pressure for manager Mackay.

At the launch of his 'Thanks a Million' charity schemetoday, the tycoon said: “We have been blessed to be promoted to the Premier League and we have gained £60m or £70m in broadcasting money.

“This season we will be profitable and will make maybe £20m or £30m.”

Tan: 'I hope to make Cardiff debt free within two months'

With this money Mackay, who has already been handed around £30m in transfer fees, will be given around £5m more by the end of the month.

The majority stakeholder said: “I thought £25m would be a nice number to spend on players. “Reading spent less than £10m last season so I thought £25m would be about right.

“The manager says that if I can, I should spend maybe £35m.

“It looks like we are almost there, maybe a little bit more.

“But I like to look upon that as an investment. I hope these players will work out well for us.”

When asked if the Bluebrids boss' job was safe, Tan simply said: “If you spend £35m on a team you expect your manager and the players to deliver. God willing, they will.”

The man who has the ambition of owning the capital city club outright says he's getting close to buying out minority shareholders.

He said: “I am trying to buy more of the club from minority shareholders. I own most of the club, maybe eventually all of it.”

Since taking over at Cardiff, Tan has overseen the controversial rebrand changing the club's colours from blue to red.

There has been a cloud hanging over the Bluebirds since then with many fans fearing more changes.

Since Hull City changed their name to Hull City Tigers last week, fears have again surfaced that the Bluebirds will be the subject of a name change.

Philosophical Tan said: “I read a bit about Hull City's name change. They are back in the Premier League and I admire their owner Assem Allam for what he has done.

“One thing that I read that I liked is he says there are so many teams with the name city.

“There is Hull City, Leicester City, Cardiff City, Bristol City – everyone is called City.

“Who doesn't know Cardiff is a city? Who doesn't know Hull is a city?

“I think that his strategy is good but I'm not saying that we are making any similar changes.

“I don't want nasty e-mails written to me tomorrow but I always say 'never say never.'

“Businesses need to evolve. If we all stayed the same there would be no internet today and we would all be living in caves.

“But definitely we are not changing anything now.”

The Berjaya Company owner says he hopes for a mid-table finish in the Bluebirds' first ever Premier League season but admits staying up would be a success.

He said: “God willing, we will have a good season.”

As long as the name has Cardiff in it I am not bothered.

I would not mind just Cardiff FC though like Arsenal FC or Liverpool FC although I suspect we'll be Cardiff Dragons FC.

The media are bringing it up not VT...I highly doubt a name change will happen but if it did I would expect a very large protest and I will certainly stop going to games if it will happen.

Nice bit of tabloid twist with the thread title when in fact there is nothing to talk about.

Again, journalists who don't want to see football as Wales' number one sport so will put a negative twist on every positive story there is. He has not said he will change it, he hasn't said I WILL change it, maybe he will sell the club and a NEW owner will change it. He speaks in future tense when he refers to it. Fed up of a negative twist being put on EVERYTHING us/Tan does.

Most of our chants have the word 'City' in it, we all refer to the club as City etc..

It's as big a part of our identity as blue and the bluebird IMO.

A lot of fans haven't been happy but have gone along with the rebrand so far like myself. I have even avoided the Bluebirds unite march etc. If the name change goes ahead then I think that a massive percentage of fans like myself who have just sat on the fence at the moment will cause many problems for the club if the name gets changed. I think it will add thousands to regular marches and protests. That's just my opinion but think it could be the last straw for many. Tan will severely divide our clubs supporters big style

I will just say this, Tan has stripped us of our colour BLUE,stripped us of our Badge, the seats 100% will be Red and I honestly believe Tan will change our name.

Now you will all say but he has done this done that, well for me personally I would rather our True Identity that I have only known for 41 years and that to me is everything, that other fans should Respect. And yes I would go to every game home and away no matter what division we were in and I have done it all before, 9 years in the 4th Divsion, never missed a game home or away game.
Other fans who have accepted the red, endorsed it and some even like it, should Resect the opinion of us fans who still want our identity back.

Now some will say we would of had no club, I have been there on 6 different occasions in 41 years and been there when we were 2hrs away from folding etc etc etc I also do nt believe we would never off had a club and the truth s, Tan never said we would not.

I will say it again wear your BLUE at every City game :ayatollah:  :ayatollah:

If he changed the name as well I could never go back inside that stadium. The rebrand was painful, the red seats may send me over the edge. But a name change would drive so many loyal supporters away.

c**t.

Simply wouldnt be the same with a name change, I can deal with badges and seats changing.

The kit I still struggle with but in red and called something else then its simply not us anymore.
But ill worry about that if its ever suggested it will change, for now ill focus on the season ahead.

I actually think he does rule it out in this interview !
Watch it and listen to the tone it is said in .

If he was leaving it open for future discussion he would have said " we are not changing it FOR now "
He never , he said " we are not changing it now " as in we thought about it but have changed our minds .

Just my opinion though

Also there are two huge story's in this interview , one possibly the biggest in our history ( finally being debt free) , the other a very very generous gesture to our charity's which shows our club in the light we have all worked towards for years , that being a friendly community club once again . :ayatollah:

Name chance won't happen, he would only think of changing the name to Cardiff dragons not Cardiff bluebirds, he knows how passionate and how Cardiff fans feel about the bluebird hence why he didn't eradicate it completely and it's still on our badge.
The title of this thread makes this look like scaremongering to me, we are about to embark on our first season in the premier league and all buzzing for it and a rebrand thread is started to put a downer on fans, disappointing. Lets worry about a name change if it ever happens but at the moment we are CARDIFF CITY so enjoy the ride.

Totally agree. If we became Cardiff Dragons, that would be it for me, we have reluctantly taken on the red rebrand and beer mat badge, we don't like it, but at least the bluebird is still there and we are still Cardiff city,

A name change would infuriate people beyond belief, I believe that if Tan sells up now though, we have a premier league club with great players, so we would be an attractive proposition for a lot of investors
