" CARDIFF CITY & SWANSEA CITY FANS EXPECTATIONS "

Sun Aug 11, 2013 4:08 am

With the Premier League kick-off less than a week away, and two Welsh teams involved for the very first time, the nation is at football fever pitch.

Cardiff City and Swansea City have both spent big this summer – as the Swans look to build on their two years at the top and the Bluebirds aim to establish themselves in their debut season in the world’s biggest league.

Six days before Swansea’s opener versus Manchester United and Cardiff’s trip to West Ham, we spoke with Cardiff fans Tony Jeffries, Annis Abraham and Dan Tyte and diehard Swans Nigel Davies and Jim White on their hopes and expectations on the brink of the new season...

" Cardiff City fans "

Q: Are you looking forward to seeing Cardiff City in the Premier League?

Tony Jeffries , who runs Cardiff City travel group Tony’s Independent Travel, said: “Everyday it approaches, it’s getting more apprehensive. It has been a long summer with the football league kicking off last week. It will be nice to start next weekend.”

Annis Abraham
who runs http://www.cardiffcityforum.co.uk, said: “It is my 41st season so it’s a dream come true going to the Premier League. I have been waiting all these years to see these Premier League teams week in and week out but if only we had been in our true identity of blue – that’s still hurting and won’t go away.”

Dan Tyte , a regular Cardiff City season-ticket holder, said: “It feels strange. It feels like something we have tried to achieve for the last 10 years and now it’s actually come around we have got that thing we have been aiming for, so it’s what next?

“It’s just: try and enjoy it, and try and stay up.”

Q: How do you foresee the season going for Cardiff?

TJ: “I honestly thought we would be one of the ones near the relegation zone, but I’m looking at the players we have got and I think we have got enough and I think I will use the words ‘easily safe’.

“I don’t think they will be in the relegation battle. I think we will give a good account of ourselves.”

Annis Abraham
“I see Malky is not going for journeymen or has-beens. He’s going for quality talent. My worry is they are not coming to us, they are using us as a stepping stone to get other clubs to notice.

“I will be happy if we stay in the Premier League because I believe the following year they will be a big team.

“I think there are a lot of teams worse than us up there. I see us above sixth, seventh or eighth from bottom.”

DT: “I think we need a few more signings and Malky’s obviously working on that.

“Looking at the teams who have gone up before us, Swansea, Norwich and Southampton have shown you can go up to the Premier League, keep the majority of the team and compete.

“A few years ago it wasn’t like that and there was a massive gap.”

Q: How do you foresee the season going for Swansea?

TJ: “They are established at the moment. Will European football affect them? I think they will do well again. I think they will be in 12th, 10th or ninth and around there.”

Annis Abraham
The best thing for a Cardiff fan is for Swansea to do well in Europe. That will hurt them because they only have a small squad. I think it will put them in trouble if they do well in Europe.

“If you do well in cups with small squads you end up virtually going down like Wigan, Norwich and Birmingham.”

DT: “They are a couple of years ahead of us in their development.

“Their squad isn’t massive and they are going to get to the group stages of the Europa League and I just think it could tire them for the league.”

Q: Glad to have the South Wales derby back?

TJ: “Yes and no.

“While they all say it’s good for Welsh football, I can’t see how it is. There aren’t many Welsh players in both sides and derbies sometimes have been a bit of an anti-climax.”

Annis Abraham
"It’s fantastic, superb and brilliant for everyone to get excited about and it’s brilliant to have two teams up there.”

DT: “It’s always good to play them and beat them but we haven’t really played that much in the last couple of years anyway.

“We were in the championship for two or three years and before that it was 10 years before we last played them.

“It’s not like it’s a regular fixture anyway because we were always above them.

“I’m excited but apprehensive because I think they are a little step above us.”

Q: What will the results of the derbies and league positions of the clubs be?

TJ: “It would be amazing if this record was broken of no-one ever winning home and away games. We have gone down there and won first and won first.

“I’m one of those, it wouldn’t worry me one iota if we lost both games and won the other 36.”

Annis Abraham
“Swansea have probably got a better team than us at the moment. If Malky gets who he wants, we will get a better team.

“In derbies, form will go out of the window and no-one’s ever done the double. I can actually see an away win for both teams.”

DT: “I think we will finish 15th and Swansea will finish 13th.

“In the derbies I can see a 1-1 draw in the game at the Cardiff City Stadium and a 1-0 win for us at The Liberty.”

" Swansea City fans. "

Q: Are you looking forward to seeing Cardiff City in the Premier League?

Nigel Davies , editor of Swansea City fanzine A Touch Far Vetched (corr), said: “Personally, I would like them still down there. When we were in the Premier League and they were in the Championship, we had one over on them.

“Still, we’re on a different level and that stage further on with European football but, for me, all things been equal, the lower Cardiff are down, the better.”

Jim White , who runs Swansea City fans’ site http://www.scfc2.co.uk, said: “I think it’s great for Welsh football and the country that they are there.

“I think it will be interesting to see how they perform.

“If I’m honest, I would like to see them in the Championship, but, realistically, it’s great for Welsh football.”

Q: How do you foresee the season going for Swansea?

ND: “I definitely can’t see us being involved in a relegation battle. I think we have got a better squad to cope than, say Newcastle had last season, and I think top six at a push is achievable and success in one of the cups – possibly retaining the Capital One Cup or the FA Cup or, who knows, we are in the Europa League and who would have thought Fulham and Middlesbrough would have got to the final of that competition?

JW: “I have got to be careful not to get over-excited because if you look at the way we performed against Malmo, we have added the right players to the squad and not lost anyone.

“Even with the European campaign, I think we will be pushing upwards towards the top eight.”

Q: How do you foresee the season going for Cardiff?

ND: “Very much honestly, I can’t see any of the three promoted teams surviving and that includes Cardiff.

“Their transfer business so far has been puzzling. Steven Caulker is an excellent signing for them. But they need another six or seven of Steven Caulker’s quality – £8m on an unknown Danish striker, I’m not sure about that one at all.

“They look susceptible to going down unless they do some good business.”

JW: “I think they will stay up by the skin of their teeth. The only reason being there are worse teams in the league.

“I think they have got a real challenge ahead of them.

“Crystal Palace and Hull will struggle and there’s always another club that gets that gets brought down amongst the mix like Sunderland, Norwich and Villa.”

Q: Glad to have the South Wales derby back?

ND: “I’m 50/50 on it to be honest.

“In some ways, there’s nothing better than a derby especially when you win it.

“It isn’t a pleasant fixture unfortunately. Both sides have got their fair share of idiots on a day like that.

“The one thing you hope in front of an audience of billions is there’s no trouble, everything passes off nice and tidy and there’s two great games of football.

“If that happens, the South Wales derby is right up there with Merseyside, North London and Tyne/Wear derbies.”

JW: “Definitely, because it’s six points.

“Joking aside, the thing we have learnt over time is you can never predict them. Cardiff might have two points before they play us and come and beat us – it’s the nature of derby football.

“It will be a fantastic chance for Wales to show itself to the world.

“Millions of people will be watching worldwide when we kick off at 4pm in November.”

Q: What will the results of the derbies and league positions of the clubs be?

ND: “Cardiff will probably finish second or third from bottom and lose both derbies.

“For the Swans, another top-10 finish and I back us to sneak another cup again.”

JW: “My results in the derbies are Swansea to win 3-1 at the Cardiff City Stadium and I think it will be 1-1 down at the Liberty Stadium.

“In terms of positions I will go Swansea 8th and Cardiff 17th.”

ND is a one eyes blinkered c**t isn't he?

Talk about bitter, tw*t!

I hope we can tear him another hole at the end of the season. The others give a fair, but biased, opinion.

Anyway just for the record (again), ND is a c**t!

How stupid is that statement? As opposed to not seeing any of the three promoted teams surviving, but that doesn't include Cardiff

They hate us a lot more than we hate them, same newport. A lot of jealousy involved.
They are like a sad bitter old man. You can only have one Capital and in Wales its Cardiff, they need to live with it.

Annis has a few times now that Swansea have a small squad :? They have the same size squad as every other PL club and are stronger this season than last season, clutching at straws comes to mind.. :thumbright:

There is a theme running through most jack posts and that is one of arrogance. And i love it. They
talk as though they are seasoned Premier League veterans. Patronising and condescending.

..................Marshall.................

......Caulker..............Turner........

Brayford...........................Taylor

Noone.....Medel.....Mutch...Montero?

...................Kimbo..................

................Campbell..............

If Montero signs, and i think he will, that is a f*cking good side. I wouldnt play Whitts and Kim Bo
because we lack a bit of bite with them both playing. I also think we are going to get in another
left back. So take that 11 - then look at the bench:

Hudson
Connelly
John
Whittingham
Gunnarsson
Bellamy
Maynard
Cornelius

Look at Swansea's best 11 and who can hand on heart say they are going to be better than us this
season? Remember, THEY have about 5 new faces too. The arrogant cunts are as much in the dark
about how their season is going to pan out as we are. But they are all walking round thinking they
are a mini-barcelona. The 11 lads ive put in the team above will not stand back and let them make
pretty patterns with the ball in midfield. Cardiff City will do a Dortmund/Bayern. Hassle, pressure
push, graft. We will surprise a few teams this season. Caulker looked immense with Ben yesterday
and stick the pitbull in front of them... we are going to be a hard team to break down, but i also
think Campbell will score goals. Whether its because he's matured or just got more experience, his
intelligence and running off the ball is sensational and his finish yesterday showed he is a confident
lad.

So Swansea think they're capable of winning the Europa League, winning a Cup and finishing top 6.

f*cking hell they are delusional, becoming like Liverpool fans.

How the fck can you say you're fans opinions on us wasn't biased? Footy experts have said we'll survive, and that's before any new signings! You're lot don't even want us in premier why? So you have 25 premier class players? Mmmmm not biased are you? :laughing5:

Ironic this as we were saying similar about them when they came up to the championship.

We were arrogant then and I think they are now.

They DO look to have a decent squad and even with 2-3 more signings we will still be struggling to finish above them, they have done superbly in the last 2 seasons.

However both clubs will be relying on players staying fit and in form and it's those sort of unknowns which makes football all the more interesting.

Have to say though our chances are better now than they were 2 weeks ago and its funny to see that we will be happy with equality with them (for now) and that they really do seem a bit put out by having to share the big stage.

An exciting season ahead all round. :ayatollah:

Sorry boys your team is a new one and forget us Jacks, your one and only aim this season is to stay in this division. We are ahead of you in terms of team development and having played for two more seasons than you at this stage. I will however say that if you stay up your growth would quicken by it being easyer to attract the sort of players your Manager wants, with the money Tan will spend next season top 10 or higher could be your goal.

i said it when you got promoted ,this league aint easy, but you out of all the promoted clubs have the best chance. :ayatollah:

great post. As well as being hard to break down, we are going to be seriously dangerous from set pieces; Cornelius, hudson, turner, connolly, rudy, pitbull - take your pick. If being the footballing side doesn't work some match days, we have a hell of a plan B. Plenty of goalscorers in the team as shown last season
