' 22nd July 2013 '

Cardiff City Football Club and the Langston Corporation are pleased to announce that an amicable resolution to the longstanding differences has been formally reached today, July 22, 2013.

Speaking of the news Tan Sri Vincent Tan said, “I am grateful and indebted to Sam Hammam, Michael Isaac and Michael Filiou for their part in this resolution, which brings to a close a lengthy period of uncertainty.

“This settlement allows us to look to a new era of financial stability, which should be celebrated by all connected to Cardiff City. I am delighted, primarily for the supporters of this great club that we can put this matter firmly behind us and plan for our future with confidence."

Sam Hammam, said, “This resolution will rightly be regarded as a proud and historic occasion for all associated with Cardiff City Football Club. Now that an amicable agreement has been reached, thanks in most part to the vision of Tan Sri Vincent Tan and the important role of Michael Isaac and Michael Filiou, the club can now focus on the exciting Premier League season ahead, while building for the future with optimism."

It has been agreed by all parties that the sole focus should be on building for the season ahead. Sam Hammam, as a part of this resolution, will take up the honorary title of Life President at the club, while the board would like to place on record its gratitude and thanks to Tan Sri Vincent Tan, Sam Hammam, Michael Isaac and Michael Filiou for their invaluable contributions to the confidential deal. Michael Filiou is joining the Board of Cardiff City Football Club.

Cardiff City have completed a £15m deal with former owner Sam Hammam to settle the club's historic Langston debt.

Current owner Vincent Tan last week insisted a deal with Hammam to finally settle the £24m debt was just 'days away' .

And WaelsOnline understands that deal was agreed today with the final sum being paid £15m and Hammam accepting a role at the club in an advisory capacity.

But Hammam will not be joining the City board of directors or have any influence in team affairs.

A series of talks have been held in recent months with a number of options discussed, but a place on the board for Hammam was never considered by the club.

Tan, however, has expressed his admiration for Hammam's knowledge of football given his wealth of experience at Wimbledon and Cardiff - and the Lebanese businessman could now become an honorary life president of the Bluebirds.

Cardiff held a board meeting today after respected club director Steve Borley responded to suggestions that Hammam’s appointment in a key role was imminent.

Quizzed by fans on Twitter, Borley was asked directly if he could confirm Hammam was returning to the board, replying: “‘Not to my knowledge.”

Sam Hammam initially joined Cardiff City in 2000 after leaving Wimbledon

He sparked major controversy by trying to rename the club 'Cardiff Celts' in a bid to get the whole of Wales behind the Bluebirds

In July, 2000 he was quoted as saying: " I feel so strongly, I am in completely, I am in with all my heart and I promise you, I will die trying to go under this red dragon, this Celtic thing."I appeal to the fans to reach to the extremities of the Welsh nation and get behind us."

Always a colourful character, even before his time at Cardiff, this picture shows him being bundled from the Old Trafford sidelines by security as he tried to enter the dugout when Man Utd played Wimbledon

Hammam famously once said: "Swansea will never be a big club and if they are being honest with themselves they will say so. If Swansea fans are Welsh and want to see top class football in Wales, then they should recognise that Cardiff is the only Welsh club with a cat in hell’s chance of making it.”

A new stadium for the club was first mooted as a long term target by former owner Hammam, gaining public approval after a meeting between with Cardiff Lord Mayor Russell Goodway in January 2002. Major financial concerns were to later hamper Hammam's plans

The club returned to the second tier of English football in 2003 after a play-off final win against QPR. Hammam was at the heart of the celebrations

Hammam appointed Dave Jones as the club's new manager in 2005

In December, 2006, Hammam agreed to a takeover by a consortium led by new chairman Peter Ridsdale and including local businessman Paul Guy

When another supporter warned of a fans’ backlash if Hammam did make a comeback, Borley replied: “Understand mate, but I don’t see it happening.”

Malaysian billionaire Tan revealed last week that the imminent deal with Hammam would lead to him converting the money he is owed by the club into equity.

“We are talking to Sam Hammam to try and resolve the Langston issue,” Tan said during a visit to South Wales.

“I’d like to regard him as my friend from our dealings.

“We are days away from an agreement and then we can convert all the loans to equity.

“That will make us much more secure and hopefully debt free, which is good.”

Asked to confirm the timescale on any potential deal, he repeated: “We are days away, it is in Sam’s hands.”

And Hammam finally signed that deal today just weeks before City mark their return to the top tier of English football for the first time in 51 years.

They can give him whatever title he wants as long as he has no actual power and keeps his nose out of the footballing matters, the better. Now we just have to wait and see what happens with the debt to equity
