Bluebirds Unite -Q&A with Lee Baddeley.

Lee, " I thought the Rebrand was some kind of Joke and the badge was putting your pint on. "

Jul 14, 2013
A few days ago, Bluebirds Unite caught up with former City Centre Half, Lee Baddeley. A Llanishen boy, Lee made more than 100 appearances for the Bluebirds between 1990-1997 and was part of the legendary 92/93 squad.

Lee very kindly agreed to share with us memories of his playing days, the huge disappointment of leaving the club he supported as a boy, retiring prematurely and his frank views on the rebrand.

BU- So, Lee tell us a bit about your early days at the City?
LB- I signed schoolboy papers with Cardiff City when I was 14 years old after being spotted playing for Cardiff Z Sports by Stan Montgomery who used to play for Cardiff City. I then signed as a YTS when I was 16 and signed a three year professional contract when I was 17. I can remember on a number of occasions having to have time off school so I could play in the Cardiff City reserve team, which was a massive step considering I was playing against seasoned professional footballers! It was hard to adjust to full time training but there were always people around to give you advice and help you over any obstacles you came across

BU- I think I’m right in saying that you were the youngest player to play for Cardiff City, until Aaron Ramsey came along, what was it like for a Cardiff boy pulling on that famous blue shirt with the bluebird badge?
LB – I remember being summoned to the office by Len Ashurst on a Friday afternoon before the 1st team travelled to Gillingham. Len asked me if I would like the opportunity to travel as the ‘fish & chip’ boy and sort out the food after the game. He also said that I should pack my boots and shin pads just incase a player was injured or went sick. Little did I know that when he read the team out an hour before kick off I was in the starting eleven!! This was good management on his part as I did not have enough time to think about making my debut! I remember the date well – 24th November 1990 and I became the youngest debutant, only recently beaten by Aaron Ramsey and only by a week or so I am led to believe!!! ( how inconsiderate!!!). To play for my home town club was something that i wanted to do from a very young age and to have the opportunity to pull on the shirt at such a young age was an honour and a privilege.

BU- I’ve read somewhere that you were a City fan as a kid, did you get to many games and who were your heroes?
LB- I watched Cardiff City as a youngster and used to go to the majority of the home games. Players in the team then included George Wood, Terry Boyle, Jimmy Gilligan, Alan Curtis, Mark Kelly, Chris Fry and Jason Perry. I would say that my favourite player then was Terry Boyle as he was a solid centre half.

BU- Did you go on to play with many of those players?
LB- I went on to play regularly with Jason Perry and also Chris Fry, Gareth Abraham and Ian Rodgerson

BU-Also at the club, at the time, was legendary ‘kitman’ Harry Parsons; every ex player seems to have got some great stories about ‘H,’ what are your memories of the man?
LB- Harry H Parsons was an absolute legend!! He was at the club when I first joined and helped me with my progression through the ranks and keeping me focused through lengthy chats while waiting for all the training kit to be washed and dried so we could lay it all out ready for the following morning. He used to love a coffee with a bit of whiskey in…or more like a whiskey with a bit of coffee in!! My favourite memory of H is when he came on our end of season 18 to 30s holiday to Kos and practically drunk everyone under the table!!

BU-Not long after you broke into the first team, Eddie May took over, tell us all about the Eddie May days?
LB- The Eddie May days are days that I will never ever forget. The whole club was buzzing, especially when Rick Wright was chairman and we were doing well. Eddie was a man that you respected and admired, a man who made you want to go out and give your all. Eddie was my youth team manager, taking over from Jimmy Mullen. He then went on to become First team manager following the sacking of Len Ashurst and signed me on a three year contract at 17 years of age. I suppose it would be fair to say that Eddie was like a father figure to me because I spent most of my adolescent years under his guidance and being an ex centre half he passed on a lot of his knowledge and experiences to me. The most memorable season under Eddie would have to be 92/93, as we did the double and the club as a whole, from the back room staff to the fans, were on such a high it was a great feeling and was the best adrenaline rush ever.

BU-There appeared to be some great characters in that team…
LB- I had the privilege to play with some great players in my short career. Dale and Stant were top class strikers and made goal scoring a habit. The likes of Ramsey and Miller added a bit of quality and aggression in the middle of the park and I think Perry having the nickname ‘psycho’ just about sums him up!!! Eddie had a good balance in his squad. A good mixture of youngsters and experience with the likes of Kevin Ratcliffe was the key to a successfull campaign in 92/93.

BU-What are your memories of the cup run in 93/4?
LB- The 94 FA cup run was another magical journey. We were not doing very well in the league but seemed to be progressing well in the cup. You see it year in year out, there is always a giant killing and that is what makes the FA cup so special. I can remember picking up a 5th yellow card in the league which would see me sit out the replay at Middlesbrough. To say I was gutted was an understatement. As we all know the lads got the result and we went on to play Man City. What an unbelievable occasion that was. The atmosphere at Ninian Park was electric. It would be fair to say that the fans were definitely our 12th man on that day. The 5th round saw us lose at home to Luton and I still believe to this day that their 2nd goal was offside !!

BU- We agree it was definitely offside! After nineteen years, we’ll have to let it go though! Towards the mid nineties things started to go downhill for the club on the pitch. You played for a succession of managers including Phil Neal and Russell Osman, what was it like at the club in those days?
LB- Those were difficult times. There was a lot of movement regarding the ownership of the club. You saw the likes of Cadmans consortium and then Kumar eventually take over the club. There were a number of manager changes and there seemed to be no stability like there was during the Wright/May era. As you know with a change of manager there will always be a change in backroom staff and players. The club was in need of a big cash injection to get it going in the right direction.

BU- How did you come to leave City?
LB- I was in the last year of my contract and Osman was the manager with Kenny Hibbit, Director of Football. It was a simple case of my face didn’t fit into Osman’s plans and there was no way I was going to be offered a new contract. Knowing this, I reluctantly handed in a transfer request as I, like any other professional footballer, wanted to play first team football. I didn’t see eye to eye with Osman so I personally handed my request to Kenny and told him that I would still give my all if I was to be selected for the first team, just like I had done throughout my whole career. He said that he had never questioned my passion as a player and wished me all the best with any future move. I was very disappointed that I never got to say thank you and goodbye to the supporters as it all happened so quickly. Although I wasn’t everyone’s ‘cup of tea,’ I can honestly say that I always gave my all when I played and no one could take that away from me.

BU- So, you found yourself in the West Country, playing for Exeter City, who was your manager at Exeter and did you enjoy your spell at the club?
LB- My manager at Exeter was ex Stoke City goalkeeper Peter Fox with Noel Blake as his assistant. Although it was a short spell at Exeter I did enjoy myself but, if the truth be known, was gutted that I had left my hometown team that I supported as a boy. It was a difficult part of my life to get to terms with. Exeter was a good club but again money was an issue and the club did struggle and we only managed to stay up by one point once!

BU- From memory, your career ended prematurely, was it one bad injury or a succession of niggling problems?
LB- I was 25 when my professional playing career ended. I had always suffered with weak hamstrings and I remember something happening during a game. It turned out that some of my hamstring had come off the bone and also pulled some bone away with it. This bone eventually embedded further down into my hamstring so there was no choice but to have a hamstring release operation which took 6 months to organise

BU- It must have been so tough packing in the game when you should have been approaching your peak, how did you make the adaption to ‘normal’ life?
LB- Retiring from football was the hardest decision I have ever had to make but there was simply no other option. Having football taken away from me was a massive blow. Panic sets in and you think to yourself “what am I going to do now?” It wasn’t easy, I can honestly say that I was depressed purely by having the buzz and excitement of football taken away. It was my life.It was only through the support of my wife, Louise, and other family members that I am where I am today. I am extremely grateful to all of them.

BU- So what have you been up to since you finished playing?
LB- With my playing career over, it was into the “real” world…I used to enjoy playing golf and my local club were advertising for a trainee greenkeeper, so I applied and got the job. I have now been in the job for ten years and have a Foundation Degree in Sports Turf Science and Management which was a challenge in itself!! When not working, I enjoy spending time with my wife Louise and my son Joe who is nearly 5 but acting more like 16!!!

BU- Do you keep in touch with many former players? And do you still follow the club?
LB- I keep on touch with a few players normally through twitter and it is nice to meet up with the majority of them if I get the chance to see a game. I do follow the club as much as I can but being in Exeter means my chances of getting to games in limited due to work commitments.

BU- Onto the thorny subject of the rebrand…What did you think when you heard City were ditching the blue and relegating the bluebird on the badge to an afterthought?
LB- I honestly thought that the rebrand was some kind of joke. Cardiff City, to me, is blue and will always be blue. Why the need for change is beyond me. As for the badge I drink beer with similar labels on!!! Dragon over the bluebird? Not for me thanks, it just does not seem ‘right’. If Tan likes red so much then why didn’t he invest in a club that plays in red? If he didn’t change the colour etc of the club then the position the club are in now would see him being branded as a legend and a saviour, as all Cardiff City ever wanted was investment to take them to the top flight, which is where they deserve to be. Previous owners didn’t even contemplate changing the colour of the club because they knew the history and what it meant to the supporters. I think a blue home kit and red away kit would suffice and put all the negativity and animosity to rest. And to think that there is threatening behaviour between our own fans because of the divide surprises me as I have always seen Cardiff Supporters as one big happy family. It is a shame that it has come to this when it could have so easily have been avoided.

BU-Why do you reckon Bluebirds Unite can make a difference?
LB- It is good to see that there are so many people out there that are so passionate about the history of the club that they are willing to fight for what they believe in. And quite rightly so to. I think that if Bluebirds Unite can get enough support then hopefully they will make Tan sit up and realise what the football club and its history really means to the supporters. It is a shame that once again football and its history is being dominated by money. I think Tan will be very very reluctant to give in to the colour change reversal because to me that would show him as being a weak person. I know that’s not what a lot of people want to hear but that is my take on it (I hope I am proven wrong!) I think the way Tan now sees it is that he will pick up the new generation of supporters now that they are in the Premier League but what he should realise and take into consideration is the feelings of those that supported the club through the bad times. I would like to wish Bluebirds Unite every success with their campaign and I for one would love to see Cardiff City Football Club playing in the right colour…. BLUE!!

Bluebirds Unite would like to thank Lee for his time, openness and honesty. Cheers Lee – a true Bluebird!

A good read that. Very much a no nonsense defender from what I remember of Lee.

Remember him well and it was a shame when he left the club. As said a solid no-nonsense defender who did well for us.

However, living in Exeter its hard for him to know all the issues surrounding the rebrand and the devastation left behind by Sam Hammam and Peter Ridsdale eras. He is correct that everyone wants blue but I think the perception of fans fighting amongst themselves is a bit OTT.

Yes it is an emotive issue but only a few have found it so unpalatable that they have given up watching us, while thousands have taken their places. Blue will be back one day we just have to wait for the opportunity. :D

I agree with him totally.
The divide between both sets of fans is for all to see.
I have actually had people abusing me for not accepting the rebrand. Very weak people.

Every single one of our fans should of been ecstatic that the Cardiff City BLUEbirds had been promoted to the top flight after years of trying but instead - Vincent and his Talitan army have destroyed our identity of our club.

The board members don't give a crap either. Don't even get me started on Steve Borley.

I would choose Blue Square Premier games playing in Blue than Premiership games playing in Red.
Steve Borley ensured me that our seats will STILL be blue for next season and blocked me on Twitter once I told him I saved his statement incase there is another porky told from within the club.

I will never give it to this rebrand. The only way I will forgive Tan is if he does a Major U-Turn and changes us back to our original colours and gives us our crest back. f**k the dragon - we are the Bluebirds :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

I have been walking past the stadium and "fans" of the club have shouted abusive names to myself purely because I had my blue shirt on. They were around their 40s or 50s and there was around 5-6 of them.
That is when I knew that the only way this divide could be taken care of is if Tan does a u-turn

1 goal (although I can't remember it!) - he's prolific!!

Great interview - perhaps Tan should read it to see what this Blue club means to thousands of people.

Don't you just love some Cardiff City 'fans?'

Yet, ironically if he actually met Lee, he'd probably be fawning all over him.

You are obsessed with me Ant. You are like an ex girlfriend who will do whatever she can just so other people don't like their ex boyfriend. Grow up.

I find it so cringeworthy when you get 40+ year olds like yourself who wear red shirts to Cardiff games and slate people for not backing the rebrand. Infact, it disgusts me to the core knowing that people from our own fan base just sit there throwing out insults to the people who actually care about the true identity of their club.

So, there you go YET AGAIN with the abuse to other people. Whenever I private message you - you ignore me you faggot.

As soon as other people can see your comments, you are right on to throwing the big words out but you can't say a single word to me one on one.

I'm 21, I'm not a kid. Just because you sold your soul it doens't me I have to.
You look around 40 odd and you're childish as f**k. You act atleast 25 years younger than 40.

Get a grip. If I want to bring back the blue - I will protest and shout my mouth out as much as I can or want because to be honest Cardiff should be playing in blue.

I bet when the pro-blues get our own way - you will be back out there shouting BLUEbirds etc and will be loving the blue kit. When we have the opportunity to fight for it - you just sit back.

Pathetic weak man. Grow the f**k up.
