Malky defends his transfer policy after Jenkins comments

Thu Jul 04, 2013 2:33 pm

Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay has hit back at claims by Swansea City chairman Huw Jenkins that young British players, like target Tom Ince, are over-priced.

The Bluebirds have had a bid accepted by Blackpool for the young flier Ince, believed to be in the region of £8m, and are hoping to thrash out personal terms with the 21-year-old in the next few days.

Jenkins, whose manager Michael Laudrup was also interested in Ince, said the price-tag was ‘staggering’ and insists that it is foreign players now who provide good value.

Last season Spanish striker Michu, who cost just £2m, proved a massive hit for the Swans, firing 18 goals in the Premier League.

But Mackay believes players in the English leagues like Ince can also represent a good investment and has pointed to a player he targeted last season, striker Jay Rodriguez, as a good example.

“I don’t think that is something startlingly new that he has said there,” said Mackay.

“Everybody is looking for a bargain, but for every Michu there are ten players who don’t work.

"That happens a lot and there’s a lot of big salaries wasted. I think you’ve got to do your research and recruit properly.

“You’ve got to look at the evidence. There’s no point in bringing in 10 £2m players if they are no better than what you’ve already got.

“Look at Jay Rodriguez last season, people said six or seven million was a lot for a player in the Championship, but everyone knew he was the best striker in the league.

"He went to Southampton, it took him a bit of time to settle, but then in the second-half of the season he was immense for them.

“You have to look at every individual case. Youngsters coming out of the Championship, who are very good players, are going to play at the highest level anyway.”

Mackay has certainly put his money where his mouth on that front when it comes to Ince.

The Bluebirds boss is trying to tempt him to the Welsh capital and revealed that it was the promise of regular football with Cardiff in the top-flight which he hoped might tip the balance.

Mackay said both he and Ince’s father, former England international Paul Ince who is currently his son’s manager at Blackpool, both agreed that the youngster needs to be a regular first teamer if he is going to progress.

“We’ve had a bid accepted and Tom has been on holiday,” Mackay told talkSPORT.

“He’s back and we are going to be talking to him over the next couple of days.

"We are very keen to push things forward, he’s a young and exciting player.

“He needs to play football and that is something that both his dad and I realise.”

Very true what Malky is saying, You can't just buy quantity you need quality especially going into the Premier League. We don't need a whole new starting 11 but we need 5-8 top quality players to tweak the squad slightly that will improve the group of players we already have here. No doubt EVERY club wants a bargain but is it worth the risk? We need proven wuality players that will help the squad considerably :ayatollah:

Malkys right michus are hard to find.£8mill for a quality player for the premier is about right and if malkys happy with ince then that's good enough for me.

But ince and cornelious are a risk. They are unproven because they have no experience in top flight football. For 16 mil the pair they represent a massive gamble by malky, they say fortune favours the brave, let's hope so

You're right he wasn't picking on him, he was poking his big huge f*cking nose into a transfer that has nothing to do with him.

I'm sure he was being hypocritical to a point as Allen was overpriced but Ince is also horrendously overpriced for what he has achieved in the game so far.

But there's often a mug club who will pay that price. This time, you're it.

The difference with Allen is we were selling, that's what made it good business.

It's not about what he's achieved so far it's what his potential is. Time will tell whether he's a good buy or not but the signals are promising and if MM thinks its worth paying £8m then so be it :malky:

Indeed, and that's where the gamble is. In Huw's opinion (and it would appear in every other clubs opinion) that is too high a price to pay for his potential.

Think what you could get in the foreign market for the same price and it becomes a no brainer.

Any player you sign can be classed as a gamble. Ince has time on his side and if he develops as hoped then who knows what he can achieve. Interesting to hear what Phillips had to say about him compared to zaha, but then I guess Man U are a mug club too.

It's no secret that apart from the big names foreign players are cheaper, but then I suppose that's because many don't adapt to the British game or way of life? Who knows. But then Cardiff will continue to look abroad as well as home for players so I've no doubt we'll pick up a few bargains of our own.

Malky knows the game inside out and is on his way to becoming a top manager. Jenkins is just a big nosed nobody. I know who I'd take advice off when it comes to football.
