Former Cardiff City star Joe Ledley urges target Victor Wanyama to stay at Celtic

Malky Mackay leads the chase for the Kenyan midfielder but former Bluebird Ledley urges the Bhoys to sit down and sort his team-mates future

Former Cardiff City star Joe Ledley has urged Celtic to keep Victor Wanyama away from the clutches of Cardiff City.

Bluebirds boss Malky Mackay leads the chase for the Kenyan midfielder after the door was firmly shut on Southampton’s £12m-plus offer by Wanyama’s agent.

That deal broke down over personal terms and the Wanyama camp now want to open talks with Cardiff, who have submitted a club record offer of £10m.

Celtic will want to drive that price closer to Southampton’s valuation of the 21-year-old – but Ledley wants Wanyama and striker Gary Hooper to remain at Parkhead.

“Hopefully the club can sit down and speak to them, and show them we are moving forward as a club and keep them for a long time,” said the Cardiff-born Wales midfielder.

“There is always going to be interest in them because of how good they are as players and what they did last season.

“But the aim is to keep the squad together because we have got a good team bond at Celtic and hopefully we can keep that.”

Celtic star Victor Wanyama is a target for Cardiff City
Ledley’s comments came in the wake of Wanyama’s representative Ivan Modia declaring the Southampton deal was dead in the water.

But Wanyama, who cost Celtic less than £1m when they signed him from Belgian side Beerschot in 2011, is very much open to a move to the Premier League.

“To suggest we are talking with Southampton is totally false, their offer was way below Victor’s expectations,” said Modia.

“There is no chance of him signing the deal on offer and, in fact, both Celtic and Southampton were informed of this some time ago.

“The player will not be forced into a corner to accept the Southampton deal, just because it is good for Celtic.

“We know there is interest from elsewhere and Victor is obviously open to those prospects.”

Celtic insist Wanyama dealing done ‘with integrity’

CELTIC last night insisted they had handled negotiations surrounding Victor Wanyama’s future “with integrity” after the midfielder’s agent said the Kenya international would not be forced into a move that did not suit him simply because it was good financially for the Parkhead club.

Wanyama’s representative Ivan Modia was responding to reports claiming that Celtic had agreed a fee of around £12.5 million for the 21-year-old. Cardiff City are believed to be keen on taking him to the Barclays Premier League, while Arsenal have also been credited with an interest in him.

However, Modia maintains there are no longer any talks with Southampton, and the player, who scored in the Celtic’s Champions League win over Barcelona last season and played a key role in securing a league and cup double for Neil Lennon’s side, is likely to look elsewhere.

“We are not in talks with Southampton and have not been since their final offer of terms, which was more than two weeks ago,” Modia told Sky Sports. “The news of the fee being agreed may just be coming out now, but we see little sense in a fee being agreed if there is no reasonable prospect of the player’s terms being met.

“To suggest we are talking with Southampton is totally false, their offer was way below Victor’s expectations. There is no chance of him signing the deal on offer and, in fact, both Celtic and Southampton were informed of this some time ago.

“The player will not be forced into a corner to accept the Southampton deal, just because it is good for Celtic. Remember, he has been with the club for two years now – without a pay rise – and has given them wonderful service ever since he arrived. Added to this is the fact that, by Celtic refusing him permission to join Queens Park Rangers last summer, Victor lost more than £1 million in potential salary earnings – yet he just

kept his mouth shut and continued to be a model professional. Many other players may not have adopted this attitude in the circumstances.”

Wanyama, signed by Celtic from Belgian side Beerschot in 2011, will now take some time to decide on his future for next

season. “We know there is interest from elsewhere and Victor is obviously open to those prospects – he is currently back in Kenya and hopes that Celtic will adopt a more reasonable approach and take into account the service that he has given the club so far and the rest of these issues,” the player’s agent added.

“Nobody at Celtic can question his attitude and he is hopeful he can leave on good terms with the club.

“He loves the club and its fans, he’s played his heart out for the jersey, but he didn’t quite expect that it may end like this.”

However, Celtic later responded to Modia’s comments and defended their handling of the situation. A spokesperson said: “These negotiations like any others are carried out by Celtic in a proper, private and professional manner. Celtic carries out its business with integrity, we work to the highest standards and in the interests of the club, our supporters and indeed our players. We do not need to comment any further on this matter.”

I'm guessing he doesn't want wanyama to leave celtic for any club, not just Cardiff.

To be fair to him he'd be stupid to leave Celtic at this time in his career. Everybody has a dream in life and for 99% of people its to play Partick Thistle in the Scottish Cup on a cold rainy evening. That is living the dream to its fullest.

Who in their right mind would turn that opportunity down for trips to Old Trafford, The Emirates and Anfield? :?

To play devil's advocate, why would he turn down Champions League football for a relegation battle?

One of the reports, and there's been frigging loads of them, has stated that he needs to get in a higher profile league in order to get ready for his next move.

We all know we'd be a stepping stone and if he is good as he thinks he is, he needs to prove himself in the Prem then get the move to a Champions League team with more chance of winning it.

Chuckles, I don't think it's fair to sum up life in the Premier league as just "a relegation battle". Even if CCFC is in that position playing in the PL also affords all the other benefits such as testing yourself against quality opposition EVERY WEEK, being seen on TV in many countries EVERY WEEK, being in front of the PL's top managers EVERY WEEK.
Basically it's a more frequent and consistent shop window for a player.

The Scottish league is shit.... U can play in the champ league with TNS doesn't make it more desirable.....

U can't get much bigger than the prem league which is on the world stage every week, regardless of which league position you are in...

Celtic may never get to play Barcelona for example in the champ league again this season either!

Loving the positivity!!! Swans, Norwich, Soton, WBA etc. none where involved in a relegation battle in their first season up... What's makes you assume we will be?

Because the relegation battle is in the Premier League. Celtic will realistically have 6 games in the Champions League, whilst we'll be playing 38 games in arguably the best league in the world(certainly the richest and most watched). If he has any ambition to one day win the Champions League, he needs to first come to a Premiership club to prove he can hack it at the highest level.

You felt that Wanyama would decide on Champions League over a relegation battle but I pointed out that he will get a lot more value from being in the PL than just being a part of a relegation battle.

PTBG. Yet further proof all Chuckles does is take the opposite view to cause arguments. Ledley left being a dick tbh and refused to go to Stoke. We lost out on money because of his selfishness so yes Ledley can do one.

Chuckles is either a mod account they use to cause a stir and get more people posting or a relative of Roathie.

Equating the scottish league with furthering a career is a bit tongue in cheek I feel. Top players want to be in the PL but I guess Joe wasn't good enough so went for cash.
