1980's fans

Fri Jun 14, 2013 11:44 am

This isn't meant to be having a go at anyone......I have seen all the posts regarding "plastics."

In the 80's and up to fairly recent times CCFC had a certain brand of fan. They would turn up in their droves when clubs with a desent away following would come to NP. You would never see them until the next "lads day out." Others would go to away games only.....it was widely accepted.

A good number of fans also had a second club...usually clubd that had a "hooligan" reputation.

I dont remember anyone slagging these fans off.

What's worse? Local people following their club or those that were interested in violence ?

I believe many have started following their club again due to trouble being eradicated at CCS. Of course some follow because we have become succesful...what's wrong with that? Would you pay £30 to watch shite?

It was part of youth culture, and was not exclusive to CCFC so get over it.

I remember Thatcher going on about hooligans not being real fans but I think it's a bit of a myth that people only go for violence, even those involved in violence are massive football fans

Anyone know the official attendance figures of CCFC in the 80's? I wouldn't mind betting we did ok for the division and team.

Two of the bIggest CCFC fans I know - City Gent and Annis - are both former hooligans who had an undercover doumentary filmed on their activies. Theyve since both grown up a lot by their own admission.

You telling me they are plastics and dont love the club?

The point Im making is that some here slag off supposed "plastics."

There is no stereotype fan........ and certainly none that are more important than others.

I never had a second club I used to travel from London for every Saturday home game from the late 80's and most mid week games

We used to have the same 300-500 at most away games, We all stood together on the terraces, as for our hooligan element most normal fans would be quite happy that they were in the same pub as you in some Northern towns when the local idiots used to pop out as it's Cardiff.

Our Hooligan element was amongst our most loyal supporters home & away, They were part of the hardcore 2000 that used to always be at Ninian Park in the 80s & 90's

People started following the club because they became succesful again it will be interesting to see how many "new fans" will continue to follow the club if we tumbled back down the leagues again

I'll put my house on it that those that I stood with on the Bob bank in the dungeon will be amongst them unless they have passed on or moved to the other side of the world.

OK it should of been a certain "group of" fans.

Thankfully not all were 20 year olds parading around like peacocks.

Majority of our away support was "lads" or "hooligans" as you call them.

The myth that they just turned up for the violence is exactly that. A myth.

Most love the club, and the trouble side was an added benefit to them.

So the enclosure would be packed for the clubs with large away followings and near empty for the like of Orient, Exeter etc....... myth?

I just wish we would get away from this pointless labelling of fans.

I couldn't care less whether someone has supported CCFC for 30 minutes or 30 years they are City fans all of them. I also hate the slagging off of fans who leave the stadium 10 minutes early, fans who wear red or blue, attend 1 game or 38, are ex-hooligans or not it simply doesn't matter.

When it comes to ticket allocation there are long standing ways of doing that and they should continue, but that does-not mean that a season ticket holder or regular away day traveller is any better or more emotionally attached than anyone who isn't.

As said it is a pointless exercise.

I think fans whowitha long pedigree should have priority and a greater say, or would you rather everyone including yourself go in a lottery draw with a 30 minute fan. The lucky ones out the hat get a seaon ticket. :laughing6:

I wouldn't criticise our fans of today regardless of their stance on the red blue stuff or for anything else for that matter. But I do genuinely believe that fans in the 80's and 90's as a whole were more passionate. I for one am very much the same today :malky:

i was there through the whole 80,s never into the hoolie thing but by christ im glad they were there in some of the situations i found myself in  but in all honestly if it wasnt for them we would not be where we are today they were the loyalist fans around turned up everywhere kept this club going how things have changed  :ayatollah: :malky:

Re: 1980's fans

Quite a few in the 80's were not lads but we had a fair percentage who were casuals it's fair to say.

The normal fans just got used to travelling with Cardiff and seeing aggro and police everywhere for the bigger games 1980-1989 v Chelsea, Swansea etc lots more city lads came for a look defo which was fairly unique as most were there for a Barney!
Good those days are gone now. :malky: but I'd like our blue shirts back please.

47 years following the city for the most part was shite.

Do you want me to name names on the ones who had second clubs? ffs there were even those that put on "mock cockney accents" to have some affinity with their London club.

I remember a few who used to go all the way to Dunfermline to follow them. Alan Durban's time managing the City..... Villa , WHU, Chelsea etc.......ask Annis if he remembers these "fans?"

in 1986 a mate and me drove his car to hilton park services and hitched to london.we jumped the tubes and jibbed the train getting off just before brighton and got a cab up to the goldstone ground.this was for a wed night game.we paid a few quid and some lads got us on their coach and dropped us back at crawley sevices then hitched up the m6 back to cannock to get his car back and then home.i have had briefs moments at the football but my mate was a well known lad.in fact he spent most of the first decade of this millenium on banning orders.nobody goes to the lengths we did to watch blues that night if you didnt love the club.yes some lads liked a knock but believe me they loved the club in nearly all instances.some of the lads of the 80,s still like a battle now and then but it,s prob once a season these days.most have moved on.they still go but it,s in the past.what happened in the 80,s happened .end of .different times .everyone has the right to change.most have.

We are just older and football was different in the 80's thats all.
We were so shit I'm amazed we had any fans....seriously!!! But those who attended home and away which included me, had such a pride in OUR club, it eclipsed everything that we feel today.
Don't get me wrong, I am so excited about this coming season, but maybe it was the time in our lives, the music, the buzz, whatever... the 80's and 90's following City for me was magnificent. :ayatollah:
The friends I went to watch city with then, I still travel with now....says it all. :old:

Re: 1980's fans

For me late 80s early 90s were some of the best years following City. All clubs had a bit of a rep back then apart from the jacks. It was part of football.
Them days have gone simply because the time they dish out.
But back in the late 80s City had mostly lads and mostly salt of the earth.

We were all City fans and passion drove us. Meeting up in Canton. Away on buses, cars, trains away. Singing although we were shit, great days. When football was more than football.
