Cardiff City fans meet to tell club: "We want blue back for Premier League"

More than 600 supporters gathered at a Cardiff pub for a meeting aimed at campaigning for the return of the club's traditional colours.


Hundreds of Cardiff City fans donned blue tonight at a meeting of a new supporters’ group that says it wants the club’s identity “restored” on the Premier League stage.

Bluebirds Unite, which was formed in March, is petitioning for the return of the club’s traditional colours of blue and has already attracted support from 5,487 signatories in 10 days.

Tonight, the group held a meeting at The Corporation Hotel on Cowbridge Road East, in the Canton area of the city – attended by what the pub estimated was more than 600 supporters.

Supporters sang songs including “We’re Cardiff City, we’ll always be blue” and those in attendance said they were relieved to see a unified response to changes brought in by Malaysian benefactor Vincent Tan last summer.

Ian Hallam, 53, originally from St Athan, Vale of Glamorgan, made the trip from his home in Castle Donington, Leicestershire, especially to be there.

He said: “I struggled to enjoy last season at all. That’s all because of the rebrand and what was happening to the club.

“It’s great to see now there’s organised opposition to this.”

Bluebirds Unite founding member Sian Branson addressed congregated supporters, saying: “We feel that with Cardiff City being promoted to the Premiership and the club being on the world stage, it’s more important than ever our identity is restored.”

The meeting heard of plans to organise a committee, register the group as a charity supporting youth football, organise family days and ask for a meeting with the club.

Ms Branson said: “We are Welsh, we are the capital city of Wales and we are proud of our history, heritage and identity.

“To us, it would be like someone trying to take away the colour of the Welsh rugby jersey and badge. I appreciate we are not the national team but for a lot of us it’s as close as we get.

“I don’t think even Vincent Tan has been told exactly what it means to us.

“If he thought blue was bad luck, why would he buy a blue club?

Supporter Annis Abraham said the massive turnout had come about since the club issued supporters with 23,000 free red scarves in an orchestrated marketing move during a home game with Brighton last season.

He said: “In a way it’s the worst thing the club ever did; in another way it’s the best thing to happen – it made the blue rise. It made the blues realise they have got to stand up and be counted.”

Baby steps, baby steps and it will only get bigger imo, wear the blue down the CCS would be the biggest message of all, there was youngsters there and old head cases there tonight from what im told to so it was every fan in general which was good to hear

A massive well done and respect to the people who turned up. I guarantee there would be a couple more there if it weren't for living far away or working etc no doubt about it.

Good choice in putting it in a pub just to try and get more adults there to make it more like a meeting that was serious and it was made for a reason instead of few kids my age just looking to cause trouble in their 'clobber'.

I have had a few little arguments with a few fans who are Pro blues and reluctant reds etc.

It looked like a good evening and seem to some organisation there but they were unsure on how many would turn up but it is a start and looks like it won't be scrapped so easily.

I doubt I will turn up but I never know but respect as this idea looks like it can go somewhere.

Lets hope sense prevails and the people that can change things for us as a club with our colours listen and do something

so chuffed for everyone involved brilliant turnout. the only thing that can stop this growing now is for the Club to enter into
dialoge and if they dont it will alienate more fans including ones who have embraced red because it will just be too blatant
that the Club is ignoring the fan base. next season it might be something the pro red supporters hold dear that gets fucked off

Let's hope so! There's a lot of members that have got into pointless and childish arguments (me included!!) which is only down to one thing.. We are all passionate for CCFC... Plus there's nothing else to talk about.

I very much doubt that there are any real "reds" are there, except Tan. I think the handful of "pro reds" that post on the message boards are either jacks, WUMs or trolls.
