How successful do Cardiff City have to become to 'make it big' in Asia?
We are told that the successful and most popular football teams in Asia are those who play in red and it so happens that those teams who play in red have been the most successful British teams in the past 30 years, Man United and Liverpool.
Will we be a big draw in Asia because we have a Malaysian owner and we play in red?
If we do gain 'supporters' in Asia because of Vincent Tan and red, what will the reaction be in Asia if we are struggling as a lot of emphasis has been placed on the colour red and luck in the Far East?
Do you honestly think that just being a red team will sell us in Asia?
Do you believe we will be only become big through positive results?
What impact would relegation have on Cardiff City's image in Asia?
Opinions please.

My honest opinion Carl, Colour will not come in to it.
Unless We win, win win, they wont be interested.
Also We will have to be Top 6 for many years and Win Cups.
They love Madrid, Barcelona, Man Utd,Arsenal, Chelsea,Liverpool, Man City, not because of Colour because they are WINNERS end off.

We would need to become a big club in the UK, before we could ever think about becoming big in asia.

We are in the top 20 of the UK and in the very highest league we can possibly reach and the most recognised and celebrated league in the World.
How big do you believe we have be in this Country before hitting Asia, are you thinking top 10, top 6 or top 4?

For us to be big in Asia, we need to be successful. For us to be successful, we need to win major trophies consistently, such as the Premier League. Colour doesn't even come into it so it was a stupid idea by Tan as fans in Asia only care about success.

It tails off for every club as not enough data collected to give fair representation.

This is Malaysia alone so understandable.

His target audience wont give a shit what colour we play in over there , all the fans over there support a team on success (hence Liverpool,Chelsea, Man Utd , Man City being well supported over there ). If we played in blue and suddenly become a force in the prem (all hypothetical) they would still support us because of success, guaranteed. This is why the re brand pisses me off it's pointless and its hurt a lot of fans of this club including me
To answer your question we would have to become bigger (or at least the same ) than Man Utd,Liverpool etc, It will not happen ever , Tan has said himself he doesn't get the game the sooner he realises that Far East supporters only support teams that are hugely successful the better

Exactly my feelings exactly , he should be catering for us over here not Asia

Honestly, i think nothing other than a CHAMPIONS LEAGUE Win (and maybe a World club championship) will really make anyone over there sit up and take notice of us.
Red Rebrand is just pointless long term....although, how many "extra" kits did they sell last year? maybe its all a short term money making thing before going back to blue in say 4/5 years time? if so, genius marketing if devisive and hurtful

Man City & Chelsea are massive in Malaysia

Big as in, up there challenging with the likes of man united, man city chelsea, and spending the kind of sums of money they do on players. Teams like liverpool have the history, so even though they are not quite up there with man united chelsea etc, they will still get the global support. We haven't got the history as such to fall back on, so a club like us would have to be right up there to get noticed on other continents like asia. and that's not going to happen unless we are spending 20-30 million on players. That's my opinion anyway carl

Annis, do you not think that the Malaysians, for example, will be interested in Cardiff City FC because of 'VT' being a Malaysian owner in the Premier League?
I'm not sure how Tony Fernandez was viewed whilst QPR were up there or whether Tan is the more shrewd of the two but I can't help feeling that he knows what he is doing
With regard to the Asian market 'buying into' the red is the $64,000 question but again I would guess (but not know) that given the colour's 'lucky' status in that part of the world, then maybe it WOULD make a difference if you put a RED shirt next to a BLUE shirt and said "Pick either one of those..."
Seems to me (no matter how reluctantly in some areas) we have to trust Tan to deliver IF we want the Premier Dream to last beyond one season...or until someone with equal finance and/or vision comes in feeling BLUE

Yep, but they are still raking in more money from it than, say, 16 other Premier League teams
Hopefully, under Tan, that could become 15, eh?
Tue Jun 04, 2013 8:16 pm
Any reason for our rise in popularity in Malaysia would solely be down to people taking an interest because the top business in the country is in charge of it. I cannot imagine colour coming into it at all.
Do we really think that Malaysian's are naive enough to follow a team, purely because they wear red.
Tue Jun 04, 2013 8:24 pm
Its a load of old tosh. Sadly its taken loads of fans a whole season of wearing red shite to realise.
If anyone thinks that wearing red will bring you luck is a lunatic.
Tue Jun 04, 2013 8:28 pm
Why does it have to be a lucky colour for fans? QPRs owner said along the lines of he would love QPR to be red, but he wont mess with the traditions unless the fans say so.
So if he as another rich asian wants red, maybe Tan is looking to coin in from rich men from asia, rather than 2 bit fans. Maybe he wants the sponsorship, part owners or just the wealthy having an interest in the club. Wealth hangs out with wealth, in person and cash. At a time when financial fair play is about to kick in, unless you are a top top team who can get massive shirt contracts, and huge sponsors on everything from cars to sponsored official air travel as teams asuch as united have, then you are losing out on revenue into the club.
We all know that shirt sales at our level dont matter as we arent big enough, so its about getting people interested who have massive wallets.

Very interesting. And that's us in the championship never mind premiership! Bet those ratings will go up even further because of the our premiership status. Something seems to be working anyway imo going off them graphs

If as several are forecasting that the method behind the rebrand madness is to get us marketed in China, then we're talking about a whole new ball game then. I'm sure I read recently though that the new Chinese TV deal for football in the UK isn't as lucrative as you'd expect, but that might be a case of'try before you buy'? More media outlets in China are getting involved with European football and seeing how emerging the country is becoming with its communist traditions finally going down the capitalist route, and a country that has more english speaking people than the USA, then if the theories are true about Tan wanting to promote us to this new Chinese football audience(and probable investors)then almost every club in the premier league will start on a blank canvas
We've come a long way

Who said it was only because we are red? Tan hasn't even said that himself.
Tue Jun 04, 2013 8:49 pm
He put us in red, not because it will brings success, but because success has been in its plenty for red teams before. He is just hoping and praying that something will happen because he did this. Well unfortunately, destiny and fate show no cares for a football team, if you even believe in it, there is no conclusive evidence to prove that red was lucky for us or got us promoted!
The money, and then the two major factors, MALKY MACKAY & TEAM TOGETHERNESS was where our success come from.
He might be a successful business man outside of football, but the silly old fool is stark raving mad.
NOW GIVE US BACK OUR f*cking IDENTITY

100% agree. The most laughable thing is that people think that because we're going on the KLSE (Bursa Malaysia) that were only going to be trying to gain investors from Malaysia as if the rest of Asia is unaware of the KLSE's existence.
Its my guess and only my guess that hes only putting it on there because he knows the ins and outs of how it works and the regulations of it. The reason I suspect it wont be put on any Chinese SE is because of the regulations and worries about that countries policies, legitimacy and integrity when it comes to business. Those very things could put off any investor. Stick with what you know and trust to be honest.

Football is big business in the Far East. I think if we manage to stay in this league for a year or two coupled with an Asian owner a Malasia tour and a few wins against the top four, it could become a very lucrative market. Here's hoping.

This is part of my question, Barry, as few of us know the strength of 'superstition' over there. I am told (but I don't know for a fact) that both RED and the No.8 are indeed viewed as 'lucky' and influences a lot more in parts of the Far East than it would over here
Hey, it might just explain all those sycophantic ManUre supporters spread across the UK!
Tue Jun 04, 2013 9:10 pm
A friend of mine that is from China was chatting with my about this (I brought him to his first City game this season) & he said that red is a big, big draw over there. All to do with superstitions & that dragons are also very powerful.
He also said that it wasn't the reason why many supported MU/Liverpool.. As most just like to chase glory & that's more of a pull.
