Margaret Thatcher - Lover her or Hate her Poll

Mon Apr 08, 2013 12:52 pm

Can quite easily guess where this poll will go but interested to see the split anyway.

So, love her or hate her?

I cannot comment on peoples opinions because I wasn't around at the time. I find it funny 15 years olds on Facebook giving it the big one, they'd shit themselves infront of her. She had the strongest backbone ever.

Hope she rots in hell, because she did not give a f**k about the 12 months we went through for her own political ends. What goes around, comes around. Champers in Neath tonight.

Arthur Scargill did what his members wanted, we voted to strike - he carried it out. We voted to save our jobs and our communities. I know it is hard for some to understand if they were not about duriing 1984-85, but she tried to murder us and split the community.

Not really worse or better than other politicians, inherited a shit tip of the country left office with it in a different state of shit. The cycle continues.

What does piss me off is that if you say anything in this country is Labour's fault the same people who say you can't say that will Blame thatcher for everything

Voted in 3 times.

The Unions created an environment for Thatcher to be elected after what they did in the late 1970s.

We killed British industries by choosing to buy cheap imports.

The likes of Rover would still be here making cars in the UK if we bought them, but let's bland Thatcher instead of accepting any responsibility.

You don't know the ins and outs of it. It's easy to say get on with it but the situation the miners were left in by thatcher meant that the only way they'd get a fair deal was to strike. She ruined this country and various other communities throughout the north. She couldn't give a toss about us.

I'm very torn on her really, as I think without her, this country would be in a similar state to Greece by now, and completely supported her policies in relation to the Union and the Free Market generally.

However, I completely opposed her over her policies in the North of Ireland, and was not a big fan of the war rhetoric around the times of the Falklands Islands issue either really.

I've ultimatley voted for the "loved her" choice (as I suspect not that many will), but can never really forgive her for the policies on the hunger strikers.

I'm ultimately pleased she was around though in my youth, as otherwise we would have gone down the pan with the likes of Scargill and Benn around in the late 70's and she was the only politician with the guts to do what was needed economically at that time.

PS loved the Malky is a better leader post

That was one of them, but I'm also talking more generally about her policies on the hunger strike, and the wider issues which have now finally been largely addressed by the Good Friday agreement - but Mrs Thatcher's policies during her tenure in office meant she wouldn't talk with Sinn Fein and even had that ludicrous policy of not allowing us to hear Gerry Adams speak.

She took a very hard line in NI.

My biggest problem in the who Thatcher debate is that history gets re-written.

The environment in the late 1970s created by the Unions was why Thatcher was able to be elected.

We killed British industry by buying cheap imports, but we don't take resonabilty, we blame Thatcher.

Yes, I agree with you - I'm just old enough to have a fairly clear recollection of the late 70's and the Unions seemed to dominate all the news reports and major strikes seemed to be happening all the time.

It was all summed up with the kind of crazy policies of people like Scargill and Tony Benn. If people really want a scape goat to hate for what happened to the miners in the 1980's they need look no further than those two - especially Mr Scargill.

The British people could obviously see through it all though, as they voted her in 3 times with big majorities, and in fact she never lost a general election as leader.

The question people really should ask is what kind of country we'd be living in now if those clowns had won rather than Mrs Thatcher - personally I shudder to think how close we came to that.

You're right as well about the people choosing to buy cheap imports, but blaming others.

Love or hate, and I admit I hate her, one thing today has done for me is to compare Thatcher to the chinless wonder we have a PM today. When you think that the current alternatives are brothers Miliband and Clegg I do think that she had something about her.

Whatever label you want to put on her as a Prime Minister she really was light years ahead of the dross we have nowadays.

Don't make me laugh the miners held the country to ransom and thought they were unbeatable, took a woman to do what was necessary and close an industry which was never going to make money, great period in our history which set us on the path to recovery. Shame Brown and Blair messed it up again we need someone like her again to sort out the mess were in

What policy was that - they chose to go on hunger strike having been convicted of terrorsism offences - guess they chose the wrong option!!!

But not convicted of offences with the same right that you and I would have to be tried by our peers - namely a jury trial - only a Judge with no jury. She should have seen that to have to have such an undemocratic legal process meant there was something clearly fundamentally wrong with the situation.

Not necessarily the day really to go into the politics of Ireland though, but that's about the only area where Blair was better than Thatcher, as we now have a normailised society in the 6 counties of the north of Ireland since the Good Friday agreement.

Re: Margaret Thatcher - Lover her or Hate her Poll

Huge topic. I'm sensitive to the hardship caused due to the way mining was dealt with and can understand the strength of feeling in some quarters. However, in general the unions needed reigning in - far too much power - and she did what was needed. The public sector still needs sorting but nobody has the balls she had.

Also, can anyone tell me how council tax is so much better and fairer than what poll tax would have been?
