The South Wales Derby...

Thu Apr 04, 2013 10:32 am

Odds on that it'll be back next season, can't wait if I'm honest... That's about it from me, haven't been on here for a while, but your boys seem to have wrapped it up with plenty to spare. The only thing I would like to see is a bit more common sense with the travel arrangements, seems excessive being at the liberty hours before kick off for a one hour trip to your place.

Be the first fixture ill look out for.. Agreed on the restrictions, but it will never change - we've too many muppets amongst both fan bases who take the rivalry too seriously.

Agree that there will always be restrictions, it's the length of time waiting around that I think they could address, probably builds up more issues. Have to say though, it's well policed these days, to the point that I have no issues taking the kids along, not sure I'd have been so confident in the days of Ninian and the Vetch.

I think the last few times we played them has been shit, all the travell rubbish and all hyped up the mot fearsome derby in history etc, nothing compared to Villa Brum and many others round the country. My first one to look out for will be Everton on a cold Tus night hopfully. And of course villa  if the cunts stay up

It's not even a derby. Two cities 40 miles away from each other! Besides, we're not up yet.

Of course it is? Bragging rights for two premiership clubs based in South Wales.....

Bring on the Swans :-)

it will be interesting next season providing we go up.

when the jacks were promoted to the championship there wasnt as much pressure on them as there was on us when we played. next season it will be a complete role reversal. they will be expected to beat us.

am i right in thinking weve never played each other in the top flight, ever??

All down to interpretation, I suppose. My idea of a derby is two clubs in the same city. Liverpool v Everton, Blues v. Villa, Rangers v Celtic, Lazio v Roma, etc. Cardiff and Swansea are one-club cities. Rivalry, yes, but not really a derby. Accept that I'm probably in a minority though.

Liverpool v Man Utd - seen as a derby by both sets of fans.
Ipswich v Norwich - ditto

Well your going to be in a very small minority, some derbies are in the same cities but that isn't what classifies a derby.

It makes it more of a fierce derby in many ways that it's a derby across City, there's no middle ground like there is with the likes of Everton-Liverpool and Forest-County.

It is one of the most fierce rivalries in the UK, and the first one in the Premier League will be something special. Everything gets so big when you first get in the Premier League and it will make the derby better, and you are already up.

Certainly not in my memory, and I'm 55 :old: In the 60s and 70s we usually played them in the Welsh Cup. Our main rivals then were Bristol City, at least in the old division 2. That's the point that I was trying to make, our main rivals change over the years. That is not, usually, the case in two-club cities. They are genuine derbies.

I would just like to reiterate that the thread is called the SOUTH WALES derby.... Yet you continue to talk about two club cities? Nobody mentioned a one city derby?

That's my cousins take on it, he's a cabbie in Edinburgh, and a Hibs fan, he says it's not the same thing down here, if Hibs lose the Edinburgh derby he has to put up with crap for weeks, if they win he dishes it out. I think his point is that being in the same city, there's no escape, unlike down here.

It's still the South Wales derby though, and I'm looking forward to it!

Welcome back scotsjack, how refreshing it is to have a jack come on our site to talk all things football and football only, you put the rest of them knobheads that infest this board on a daily basis to shame, thanks for saying we are up but athough it looks nailed on i'll wait until we've crossed over the line, i think you'll understand why  as for the possible derby next season and the pathetic travel arrangements, unfortunately, i can't see thngs changing due to the amount of morons who will be out and about for this game.

Think the "south wales" bit gives it away, nobody is stupid enough to think its a "local" derby mate but a derby it IS same as newport would be, bristol and wrexham i'd agree are just rivalries. Only my opinion of course.
