Carl Curtis: He’ll make mistakes but Malky will take Cardiff City to Premier

WalesOnlineMar 9 2013

Cardiff City will get promoted this season. I am adamant of that.

There is still plenty of work to be done and even though results have not been great recently we deserve to be where we are – top of the table.

What matters above all else is that we get promotion, whether that is as champions or not.

In Malky Mackay we have a fantastic manager who has shown great leadership during his time at Cardiff.

He signs players who are going to fight for the cause until the final whistle blows in any game.

Since joining the Bluebirds, Malky has brought the club and the fans closer, he works very well with the press and, in my opinion, has got a very bright future in football management.

It is important to our club and its success that we keep hold of Malky and support him in the task of making us a Premier League club and, when that happens, establishing us in the top flight.

What Malky has not got yet is the experience in management, but he is learning and finding his way and, to be fair, who could argue with his achievements at City so far?

A play-off position and a League Cup Final were unexpected and massive accomplishments last season and, despite there being no cup run this season, our target is firmly on promotion.

And with 11 games to go, we are in a good position to achieve our goal. Yes, the manager will make mistakes along the way and I still believe that mistakes were made in January during the transfer window.

We needed a centre-half and a target man to come in and add strength in those positions, and only Malky will know why he did not add to the squad in that way.

The signing of Fraizer Campbell was an excellent acquisition and will benefit our team; he has already gone some way to repaying the £600,000 that we paid for him.

But I believe a target man was essential, someone to compliment the squad and the players we have.

I have also written on several occasions over the past few months that we needed a centre-half also, either one who is better than we already have or someone who has the experience to step in at short notice to cover injuries or suspensions. The need for that defender was all too evident at Middlesbrough last Saturday.

Malky shuffled the pack by making two changes to the defence to cover the loss of one player, Mark Hudson.

During the first half our back line was all at sea and not the tight unit it normally is, so at half-time a further change was made to the defence.

Those changes were a result of us not bringing in a centre-half during the last two transfer windows.

I don’t envisage Malky dipping into the loan market unless it is absolutely necessary as I am sure he will not want to upset the spirit in the camp.

Malky puts a lot of trust in his players and wouldn’t want to blow that relationship between himself and his squad by letting down the players who have got us in to this fantastic position.

As I said in my opening line, I believe we will get promoted but I feel life could have been a little easier on the nerves had we strengthened the squad a little further than we actually did.

I am not concerned that we are not playing until after our competitors do over the course of the next couple of days.

People talk of us letting slip an 11-point lead but I look for the positives in that we established an 11-point lead and no other team has been able to do that.

A massive game awaits on Tuesday and I suspect Leicester are still smarting from our pre-Christmas smash and grab at their place – now is the time for everyone to be united and support the team right through to the final whistle.

Please don’t leave the stadium with 15 minutes to go, like many fans did when Derby scored on Tuesday evening.

Like the players do, we should give it everything we have got until the final whistle.

Malky has said it countless times this season; what our support means to the players and the lift they get when we are in full flow.

So let’s heed the manager’s words and support our team.

Let’s leave the politics of the club be for the last 11 games and concentrate on channelling our energy on supporting the football team.

Should have got a CB and central midfielder in the window. He didnt, we'll fall now. 4th place finish.

I do and I support them ferociously, but the writings on the wall. Yet again we become dependant on one payer, he gets injured and were fooked. Money was available in Jan and .malky declined, then put his faith in Kev (past it) and Nugent (too young). His squad also lacks leaders.

Malky's done good, but seriously if we play like we have for the past two years in the Prem we are getting relegated. We play such shite football it's unbelievable.

Should have got a right back in which would allow Connoly to cover for Hudson.

Perhaps HE (Malky) has faith in what he's got ;)

Nothing will change after today except we will have another game in hand with which to direct our own destiny rather than playing 'catch up' as in previous seasons ;)

Others will still mess up (Leicester and Palarse are doing that for themselves right now ;) ) and WE are STILL the team to measure up to ;) :ayatollah:

Steve, I am a fan who supports the team regardless up and down the country, I am entitled to my opinion as much as you are to criticise mine. I have quite clearly said Malky is a fantastic manager and someone we should do our very best to keep hold of but is he above criticism? No he is not, exactly like Sir Alex Ferguson is not.

You have asked me a couple of times to name the elusive striker that we should have signed, that is the managers job not mine, as Tan would say I am just a paying customer.

If you believe we don't need the striker then fine but I do.

Another point would be I wrote that Malky knows why he didn't sign another striker or the Centre Half, I did not state that he didn't try, did I ?

I read in yesterday's paper on the message boards that Malky should drop Whittingham and try Kimbo and that Mason deserves a start, it is all about opinions as I have already said but I doubt Malky will be too concerned about them.

Wez, no truth whatsoever in the Charlie Adam rumour. Malky chuckled at that one

If injuries dictate then a loan player would be looked at or if a player becomes available that would be too good to turn down then don't expect anything to happen in this loan window.

Carl

I'm sure Malky is under more pressure from tan than any fans Yes everybody is entitled to opinions but all I'm saying is what players do people think we're available at the time that would make them disappointed Malky did not sign him.
No matter what all us football pundits think the reality is we are 5 points clear with two games in hand and I believe if we win Tuesday the pressure reverts to the teams below us as they are fighting over the one place.
Every manager and fan of teams below us would swap places in a heartbeat.
I find it very hard to see why anyone could fault or criticise Malky at this moment in time

Steve don't forget I wrote my piece on Thursday afternoon so the point difference and games in hand have since changed, not that it matters though because as I said in my piece, Malky and the team should take huge credit for getting us to the to top of the league.

Of course Malky is under pressure from Tan but the point of my column is to put across my opinions and I won't shy away from those opinions.

I get the feeling you believe I am over critical of our manager but I am very supportive and complimentary of him.
