southhampton, qpr, newcastle.... a few little facts

Sun Jan 06, 2013 3:37 pm

It seems a lot of posters believe winning in the 3rd round of the cup could have hindered our promotion push. Lets look at the last three years of teams to be top of the championship at chistmas....

Last year... southhampton... 3rd round fa cup WON. Promoted.

Year before... Qpr, 3rd rd fa cup WON....Promoted.

Year before that.. N/castle, 3rd rd fa cup WON....Promoted.

Exactly! Less games and all promoted!

One of the teams that went up automatically out of the three you mentioned above was southhampton. They won their 3rd round tie.

West ham went up through the playoffs.

I stuck stats for the last 5 years on another post. I'm not repeating it but;

12 of the 15 clubs who went up were all out by the 4th round. Only one, WBA, were able to do a cup run and get promoted they were Champions and Semi finalists the year we made the final.

How many teams who were top of the table at xmas went out at the 3rd round stage of the fa cup?

How many promoted sides ( championship) have been knocked out of the cup by non league opposition?

Basically this. We have no depth in our squad hence the need for additions this window.

That is totally irrelevant to your argument. Which it appears you have lost. It is very difficult to fight the good fight on all fronts. As Hitler found to his cost. Know your limitations, set your objectives and do all you can to attain those objectives.

I suspect most people at the club (including fans) want us promoted. That is where all our attention should be focussed.

Im merely stating that the last 3 leaders of the championship did not go out of the fa cup at the 3rd round. No arguement, its a fact.

I'm gutted that we lost yesterday but now we'll never know whether a cup run will effect OUR promotion push now this season, we've lost, we're knocked out so arguing whether we would have now is irrelevant. Onto Ipswich :ayatollah:

2011-12 Southampton were top, went out in January (4th round). Finished 2nd.
2010-11 QPR were top, went out in January (3rd round). Finished 2nd
2009-10 Newcastle were top, went out in January (4th round). Finished 1st
2008-09 Wolves were top, went out in January (4th round). Finished 1st.
2007-08 WBA were top, went out in the Semi-Final. Finished 1st

And what about Reading? Won the league while getting knocked out in round 3.

So only one of the 5 went out at the 3rd round stage yet all got automatic promotion.

None played a side as low down the league as maccelsfeild.

Read it however you want. You say only 1 of 5 out in the third round others will say 4 of 5 out before January was over.

Why has it? The stats are all there.

Only one top side has gone out at the 3rf round stage in the past 5 years. Every side which won their 3rd round tie (plus the one that didnt) got promoted.

The last three sides to be top at xmas progressed to the 4th round.

surely a better stat would be to see the change in league placing of those who went on major cup runs (such as yourselves or barnsley in 08) from say january to may?

Oh okay so Malky should have made sure we won this round and then went out in the next round. If this is how your brain works then you aren't using statistics properly.

Malky tried to win the match yesterday whilst giving everyone a rest after a hectic Christmas, it didn't work out, lets move on.

Maybe, but i can confirm that after city got beat in the carling cup final we went on easily our worst run of form of the season.

We took just 13 of the availible 39 points.

Did you just disprove your own theory?

Most Championship sides who had decent cup runs were usually mid to top half teams and remained there after their run. It would be conjecture to suggest the cup run affected their chances of getting to the play offs as no one will ever know.

its obviously a distraction to league form unless you've got a good enough squad to compete on both fronts. anyone who thinks it isnt is kerrrrazy

Is a cup run really a " distraction to league form" though???

Citys record last year, the game after playing a carling cup tie reads....

Played 7
Won.2
Draw.5
Lost..0
