Cardiff could be set for 'premier' economic boost

Fri Jan 04, 2013 8:25 am

Cardiff could be set for a major economic windfall from the Bluebirds’ promotion to the Premier League – if a new study on rivals Swansea City is anything to go by.

Economists estimate Swansea City’s first Premier League season to be worth £58m to the club’s home city and its surroundings.

The Welsh Economy Research Unit at Cardiff University study said promotion had also created or safeguarded 400 jobs.

The university’s Professor Max Munday, who led the study, looked at spending by the club, its players and other staff plus money handed over to pubs, clubs, taxis, restaurants, hotels and other businesses by thousands of home and visiting fans.

Businesses in Cardiff said promotion for the Bluebirds – currently seven points clear at the top of the Championship - would give them a “mini boom”.

The study found non-season ticket holding Swansea fans spent on average £46.34 going to matches.

Around 63% of this represented buying a ticket, the next largest category being food and drink (£9.15 per person).

For visiting fans, Newcastle supporters reportedly spent £80.32 per person, Blackburn supporters spent £81.31 per person.

Most was on food, drink and tickets, but there was also a relatively high proportion of spending on accommodation.

Swansea City’s Liberty Stadium has a 20,750 capacity but the club plan to increase it to 32,000.

The Cardiff City Stadium’s official capacity currently stands at 26,800.

Both hold around 2,000 away fans.

Officials in Swansea have worked hard to promote the area since their promotion, running marketing campaigns in English cities, including poster panels on the Manchester light-rail system ahead of a game against Manchester City.

And leading football figures have praised the likes of Swansea Bay on Twitter.

Prof Munday said: “There are other effects that are difficult to quantify such as the raising of profile.

“Cardiff has already benefited from good runs in the Championship but undoubtedly there will be a big economic boost if Cardiff can gain promotion.”

Marie Fagan, chair of the Cardiff Hoteliers Association, said: “After the benefit of Swansea’s promotion was spelled out, it’s clear there could be a mini-boom in the Welsh capital if Cardiff City go up.

“However, we’ve been waiting around four or five seasons for it to happen so we won’t be planning just yet.

“Cardiff has done well in terms of international sport having rugby and cricket but if we could have a Premiership side here that would complete the jigsaw.

“We won’t plan until Cardiff are up but we have our fingers crossed.”

Roger Pride, managing director of Cardiff & Co, added: “Attendances at Cardiff City are already an average 22,000 and the bigger clubs will boost away supporters coming to Cardiff.

“The challenge will be to encourage some to stay longer and to return.”

The way I read that report is there are 400 very temporary jobs in the Swansea area....

Re: Cardiff could be set for 'premier' economic boost

These reports are crap.

It says most of the money goes on buying a ticket and food with the food money being spent at the ground. Well where does all this money go then, on the player wages. An economic boost helps the area not 11 poofters on a green patch.

Couldn't agree more plus you can chuck in agents and other associated leaches who do nothing but bleed clubs (and by association fans) dry.

This is money that gets spent in and around swansea on match days or wekends nothing to do with swansea city fc. Is it that hard to understand. :?

This press report makes it seem that they actually DON'T want us to get promoted..ffs, we've done NOTHING yet! All this does is attempt to increase pressure on the club.

If, god willing, we are still in the top 2 after Easter then and only then should these type of reports be published.

Until then, as us fans know, ONE GAME AT A TIME

Re: Cardiff could be set for 'premier' economic boost

Lets be honest here. Promotion to the Premiership was always going to boost tourism in Swansea
because it has meant thousands of visitors through football that would never, ever have gone there
otherwise.

Cardiff is a totally different entity.

We are a pretty high-profile European City now, because of the Welsh Assembly, Euro politicians
visiting etc. The Millenium Stadium has seen tens of thousands of visitors for numerous sporting
events and Music venues etc. Every weekend, town is teeming with stag/hen do's from all over the
United Kingdom. Cardiff is a pretty high-profile City in the UK.

Man Utd, Chelsea, Everton, Spurs, Arsenal, Liverpool... all have been to Cardiff over the last ten
years for Millenium finals. So their supporters know what its all about.

Swansea is revelling in a few 'football visitors' ringing up family and saying.

"Ooh you must get down the mumbles, its lovely there"... followed by Eric Arkwright of Yorkshire,
and his wife spending a tenner on a scone and a deck chair.

A f*cking Plane crash into the City Centre of Swansea would boost tourism for fucks sake

I read the report and (to me) it only 'suggests' an economic boosts, although I have no doubt there would be one even if the majority of it goes into Huw J's 'Spanish Retiement' account

But just imagine if Premier League status can have a positive affect on a third world backwater like Swansea then what would it do for a vibrant, forward thinking CAPITAL CITY like Cardiff with a bigger 'real' profile, a bigger fan base and potential for a bigger (paid for) stadium? ;)

In my eyes (car parking apart!! LOL  ) all I can see are benefits to club (possibly mainly owners), supporters and to the profile (if not the coffers) of our beloved city :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

As well as Cardiff, Valley towns would probably get a slight 'boost', nothing major, but with places like Caephilly, Blaenau Gwent and Merthyr boasting big Cardiff support, it would surely be a good thing
