' Cardiff City star Kevin McNaughton wants new contract '
Dec 30 2012

“There’s been no talks about a new deal at the moment so I am just keeping my fingers crossed. I would love to stay at Cardiff, but I’ll have to see what happens.

LONG-SERVING full-back Kevin McNaughton is desperate to spend the rest of his career at Cardiff City, but fears his time may be up in the Welsh capital with his current contract finishing at the end of the season.

The 30-year-old has no idea yet if he will get a new deal under manager Malky Mackay, but with Cardiff on course finally for Premier League promotion, McNaughton, in his seventh season at the club, said he is determined to do all he can to earn one.

Since signing on a free transfer from Aberdeen way back in May 2006, McNaughton has become a firm fans’ favourite at Cardiff, but after a major influx of talent last summer he has found his once assured place in the starting XI become more and more under threat.

Ironically, the glut of new players that has seen the Scot marginalised might finally help the Bluebirds secure promotion after years of knocking on the door of the Premier League and McNaughton admits he will be as thrilled as anyone if Cardiff can finally go up even if it costs him his place at the club.

“I hope to stay. I would love to stay, but the decision is up to the club really. I would sign in a heart-beat,” said the Dundee-born defender.

“I would be delighted to see the club progress. It’s part of football that sometimes things don’t work out for you.

“I could never be disappointed if this club gets promoted. I would be absolutely delighted. If I have to move on at the end of the season then I have to move on. That’s just a part of life and you’ve got to get on with it.

“I made the decision to leave Aberdeen and they were desperate to keep hold of me. Now I’m experiencing the flip-side of it in that I’m desperate to stay, but I might not be here. That’s football and you’ve got to take the highs and the lows. I would not be begrudging anyone promotion here.

“There’s been no talks about a new deal at the moment so I am just keeping my fingers crossed. I would love to stay at Cardiff, but I’ll have to see what happens.

“I’d definitely like to see out my career at Cardiff, my children were born here, it’s my home really, but the way the club is progressing, you can’t always hang on to it. Sometimes you have to move on just to get playing regularly. I’ve not spoken to the manager about it. I’ve just been busy grafting away to try to get myself back in the team. That’s the main priority right now.

“I know if I’m playing regularly I can do a job in this league. I’m as fit as I was when I came in the door. Well, I feel that way anyway. I do feel I can do a job at this level if I can get a new contract, but we’ll have to see. I’m just working hard and keeping my head down. The squad is full of good players and the team is doing well so there’s not a lot you can do about it. “During 270 appearances for Cardiff down the years McNaughton has experienced every high and every low with the Bluebirds including an FA Cup and Carling Cup appearance at Wembley along with a string of play-off heartaches under current boss Mackay and his predecessor Dave Jones.

Right now the Bluebirds sit top of the Championship and look in great shape to finally make the step up to the top-flight.

McNaughton admits even he is amazed by the progress the club has made both on and off the pitch since he arrived, indeed the Scot believes there is only one thing missing now and that is that long-cherished promotion.

“It was very different when I arrived We were in Portakabins getting our food and doing weights in the car-park. It was very different,” added McNaughton.

“That was just the state of the club at that time. The money was getting spent on bringing boys in. What was going on in terms of training and things like that was really second fiddle. The club has progressed. It’s crazy really. The missing piece of the whole jigsaw now is getting promotion. That’s really the bit that’s been missing. Everything is in place now although it wasn’t when I arrived here.”

Give it to him. Been a great servant to this club and if we go up his experience may be what we need. He is a wise head and had Zaha in his pocket and could do a similar job on players like Sterling.

I'd give him a 1 year deal out of respect for the service he has given the club, but also let him know that playing time for him would be limited.

Yes, without a doubt in either division.

Even if sub to subs mention someone who can play across the back 4 and will give 100% is am asset to any squad. Also keeps the continuity

If it's one player who deserves a contract it's him. He and whitts are the two modern day "legends". Clubs don't get them so much no more, we've seen players jump ship when times get bad but they stuck with us, so we should stick with them.

I'd give him a 2 year contract, taking him up until he's 30. Then if we're relegated (assuming we go up) keep him on for another year or two. However if we stay up we could let him go in 2014.

Him, Whitts and perhaps even McPhail are three legends at this club :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Without a doubt hes a brillaint defender which we have seen countless times. Been a great servant and would be a good asset if we went up

I agree with CardiffBorn7. McNaughton will know that Premiership games will be limited but, out of respect, I believe he has earned a 1 year contract.

There have been times when I have doubted him but yesterday I remember at least one "No Nonsence" tackle and that for me was it. He is not as skillfull as Whitts and he doesnt score goals but what Defenders are supposed to do he does well.

I would, he's a utility defender, always handy

NO......Its time to ditch the deadwood if we go up and we have more than few who will have to go if we want to survive in the prem :ayatollah:

super Kev has been a great player for the club he deserves another year :ayatollah:

He deserves a shot at the Premiership due to his years of service, he will want to prove a lot of people wrong and will give 130%.

Re: " Be Honest would you give him a New Contract ? "

Sun Dec 30, 2012 8:41 am

Yes I would offer him one year deal because of his verstility. He's not a premier league quality defender but would be useful squad player.

I wouldn't exactly describe him as deadwood yet. He's still doing a good defensive job for the team at this level.

He also loves the club and is becoming a 'hall of famer'.........players like this are worth keeping at the club. They're not deadwood, they're more like core parts of the club. It gives good stability.

2 year contract which, hopefully sees him as Super Kev the Super sub in the premiership for us.

It would probably be kinder to release him as he is playing regular football at the moment so would get a good 3 year contract with a top half championship club, keep him on a one year contract and he will prob never make the first team then in a years time may be scratching around for a club. Sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind.

Kev can still do a decent job. He has given is all over the past 2 games with non stop running and putting in his challenges. :ayatollah:

Yes. Extend his current deal by a year

Re: " Be Honest would you give him a New Contract ? "

I have supported cardiff City 48 years and throughout those years from time to time comes along a player that has a great affinity with the club and fans. Kevin McNaughton is that man, he is the modern day "Mr. Cardiff City" and I for one would be extremely upset if he were not offered a new contract. :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Re: " Be Honest would you give him a New Contract ? "

Yes, in a 'heartbeat'. I'd give him a one year extension and see how he does IF (WHEN!) we go up. If we don't go up then we know, despite a relatively poor last 12 months by his standards, he is quality in this league. In terms of the EPL you really never know how a player will perform if they have never played there before and I think he deserves at least a crack at it. Regardless, he's a great squad player and versatile.

Tough one.

A loyal servant and clubman, has given me some great moments down the years and have great affection for him. However, his distribution , which was never his strongest point, has dramatically declined. But can still do a good defensive role, and can fill in at left back and central defender ably. And of course those barn storming runs! But this time next year wether in the Prem or not, I am sure we will have a new first choice right back. So as back up, and a utilty defender and despite his awful passing, I would offer him a one year contract, it be great to see him in the Prem.

Would give him a new contract without a doubt, he deserves it :ayatollah:

i would give him a new contract and then give him a coaching role at the club he loves us and we love him simple as that he is one of ours.Very committed player for us over the years and is still giving his all for the club.

No i would not

The modern full back needs to be able to deliver a cross, as much as we love the 110% never say die effort Kev gives us, he can't, which is why no Premiership team took him when he was at his best for us & why he has only a handful of caps IMO. Having said that, I'd offer him a one year deal with another as option for City; if & when we get promoted, he'd be an OK second choice, if we are there for only a season, when the first choice will want to leave us to stay in the Premiership & we will need an experienced pro. No sentiment in football gentlemen!

i love super kev, great servant to the club, deserves his contract extended, however a coaching role is taking it a bit too far ;)

he wouldnt be able to pass the ball to the youngsters to get them started!
