Our Loan Policy?

Thu Oct 08, 2026 2:44 pm

For those interested in how Brighton , Bournemouth and Brentford succeed in the premiership, there an interesting article on BBC website.

Saying how they use analytics to identify players with human tweaks. The players are then loaned out to high level but not top leagues like Austria, Belgium etc. Then 2/3 years later brought back in and a few years after that sold on to the usual suspects for £50million plus.

This got me thinking how both our incoming and outgoing loan policies work. Our outgoing one is a joke sending 18 year old to the god awful LOW, is pointless . What decent experience can be gained there. We should be loaning players to the 3rd/4th divisions and insisting they play, like clubs do to us.

And as for the incoming ones I get really disappointed when we get to see someone like kellyma n, who we could never afford leave after a year.

Although I suppose it's because we 're threadbare, most seasons.
Why don't we get some more loans like trott, who we get first option on. That's the way forward.
To the city BOD, it's not difficult is ?

There is a reason some of our boys go to league of Wales. It's about ability that's all. We can't make league 1 and 2 clubs take a youngster, insist he plays if the level is not even close

This is what I think too. We do have some good players coming through but them dealing with League One or League Two now would be too much for them and could actually damage their development. We know the likes of Dak Mafico have huge potential but we saw ourselves last season that he wasn't ready for League One.

The one player we have loaned down the EFL that it benefitted was when Joel Colwill went to Cheltenham and Exeter. Did him the world of good, but he was ready for it and not all young players are ready for that at a young age.

I absolutely agree so many if our players go to the Welsh league and Non league etc as the difference in our leagues is massive

I think it depends on the individual player too. Joel worked because going on loan because he seems to relish getting stuck in a lot of boys coming through would probably really struggle with the physical aspect of playing league one or two
