About Blackburn Rovers

This is Blackburn's ninth successive season in the Championship, having been promoted from League One in 2018.

They finished 20th last season.

From 1992 they played 18 out of 20 seasons in the Premier League, but haven't returned since being relegated in 2012.

They famously won the Premier League in 1995 and are also six time winners of the FA Cup.

Club Connections

Rude Gestede played over 50 league games for us and went on to sign for Blackburn. He is now their Head of Football Operations.

Cardiff City legend Peter Whittingham ended his career with Blackburn.

The Opposition's Manager

In June, experienced manager Tony Mowbray returned as Blackburn manager. He previously had a spell in charge of them from 2017 to 2022 - getting them promoted from League One.

Mowbray has managed nine different clubs and has been a manager since 2002.

He got West Brom promoted to the Premier League in 2008, as well as that promotion with Blackburn to the Championship.

Opposition Dangerous Players

Oladapo Olofayan has three goals and two assists in the league since signing in the summer.

Sam Morsy is an experienced midfielder at this level and Todd Cantwell obviously can provide quality moments.

Referee

Referee TBC.

Head To Head - Last Five Meetings

We have won only one of the last five meetings, sign Blackburn winning three.

That win was in the last game between the two, it finished 2-1 in the Championship at Ewood Park in March 2025.

Blackburn Rovers attacker Mathias Jorgensen could return to full training this week, as detailed in a report by the Lancashire Telegraph.
Blackburn Rovers have been without the striker since their clash against Middlesbrough on 22nd August. Rovers are positioned in 16th place in the Championship table after their opening eight fixtures and they are four points off the play-offs and four above the drop zone.

Jorgensen, 26, made the switch to Ewood Park last January and he penned a three-and-a-half year deal in Lancashire running until June 2029, with his current club holding an option of a further 12 months on top of that until 2030. He has made 21 appearances in all competitions to date and has chipped in with five goals.

In this latest update regarding his condition, the Lancashire Telegraph claim he has stepped up his recovery now during the international break. He is an ‘outside chance’ of making Tony Mowbray’s squad for their upcoming match against Cardiff City at home this weekend.

Blackburn Rovers drew 2-2 away at Portsmouth last time out with attacking pair Ryoya Morishita and Dapo Afolayan getting their goals at Fratton Park. Their upcoming opponents are sat in 21st position in the division.

Blackburn Rovers in line for Mathias Jorgensen injury boost
Blackburn Rovers will be pleased when Jorgensen is back in contention. He will give them more competition and depth at the top end of the pitch.

The ex-Denmark youth international will be a useful option for Rovers to have available. He can battle it out with the likes of Andri Gudjohnsen and Yuki Ohashi, among others, for a place in Mowbray’s starting XI when everyone is fit.

Jorgensen was snapped up by Blackburn Rovers just over 12 months ago to bolster their attacking department. He found the net on five occasions in the last campaign to help them secure their second tier status under ex-head coach Michael O’Neill.

Prior to his switch to England, he fired four goals in 15 outings for Bodo/Glimt. He has also had spells in the past with the likes of OB, New York Red Bulls, Esbjerg fB and AaB.

Jorgensen has missed a lot of football over the past month or so. Blackburn Rovers won’t want to rush him back in and will slowly ease him back into the action.

It will be a big boost when he is back and he will be itching to show more of what he can do. Mowbray’s men will see their next game against Cardiff City as one they can pick up all three points from.

lackburn Rovers return to Ewood Park on Saturday determined to make a winning start to a demanding run of fixtures, but Tony Mowbray has warned against underestimating a Cardiff City side he believes are better than their results suggest.

After a three-week break from international duty, and even longer away from home soil, Mowbray is looking forward to being back in front of the Rovers supporters.

But he expects a stern test from Championship newcomers Cardiff, and feels patience may be required on and off the pitch.

"They've got good players, very well coached, play a very similar shape to what Wolverhampton play, with one six and two eights," said the Rovers boss.

"It's going to be a challenge for us, but one I think hopefully we can come out on top of."

While Cardiff have won only once this season, their underlying numbers have caught Mowbray's attention.

The Bluebirds have averaged around 65 per cent possession across their opening eight matches and rank among the division's leading sides for shots, highlighting the threat they carry despite their league position.

"They play with a lot of confidence, they have a lot of the ball," Mowbray continued.

"So don't be too alarmed if you come to the game at the weekend and Cardiff are passing around in midfield and at the back.

"I'm just trying to paint a picture for our fans. They're a decent football team, we have to recognise that."

Mowbray insists Rovers have prepared for what Cardiff will bring and believes the outcome will be decided by quality in the key moments rather than possession statistics.

"Millwall had more possession than us, to be honest, and we beat them 3-1," he said.

"In my mind, it's not about the possession, it's about the quality in the final third, in the penalty areas and making the right runs and having the right quality with the final passes and the finish."

With trips to Bristol City and West Brom to come next week, Mowbray is keen for Rovers to lay down a marker at home.

He added: "It's a tough run of games for us, but let's start that run of games off with three points if we can."
