Lib Dem leader hits out at 'corrupt beyond repair' FIFA

The Liberal Democrats have urged the Football Association and other European football organisations to withdraw from Fifa following a World Cup marred by controversies.

The party branded Fifa “corrupt beyond repair”, citing exorbitant ticket prices for supporters and the controversial reversal of a US player’s suspension after lobbying from Donald Trump.

Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey stated that Fifa boss Gianni Infantino had “crossed red line after red line”, allowing Donald Trump to dictate on-field decisions and corporate greed to exploit fans.

Sir Ed called for Uefa to “step up and walk away from Fifa” and work with other confederations to build a clean, transparent governing body that prioritises fans.

Further controversies highlighted included Fifa's “dynamic pricing” for tickets, the introduction of “hydration breaks” for advertising revenue, and the defence of Argentinian players displaying a Falkland Islands banner.

I don’t rate Ed Davey as a ‘politician’, nor do I see where his Party are genuine contenders for government. However, on this topic, I agree

UEFA should walk away from FIFA; the European scene can survive without the corruption and sycophancy of Infantino and his ilk

Even transport to stadiums cashed in with eyewatering increases in costs, over £100 for a short train ride usualy costing $15. It's been a terrible world cup, 4 quarters with Adverts on American telly, Trump over ruling referee decisions, match day prices beyond the average fan and to top it off, a 30 minute half time interval for a superbowl style show. I am not the biggest fan of Ed Davey because he did nothing for those that worked for the Post Office, when they were punished despite being totally innocent.

However, I do agree with him here.

It is possible to not like someone but agree with a point they're making.

He is up for re-election soon but Europe are alone in wanting him gone so expect him to stay for the one term he officially has left. Who knows if he'll try to change the rules, with the backing of everyone except the Europeans he could certainly try.

Maybe not change rules but manipulating them? Like 34 wc he left Australia only 25 days to put in a bid because he announce the bidding process just those 25 days before bids closed..... now the 38 wc is either north Central America or oceana? Usa want them and the rules say they can bid but they want to be sole hosts which is not popular with other countries in north Central
