My opinion has always been that these honours should be for normal people - not sports people, celebrities, politicians, actors etc.

Absolutely not. I’ve never understood why professional sports people get honoured for doing their job. For which they are paid very well.

Personally I think Bales achievements in a Wales (and Madrid shirt for that matter) far outweigh what Harry Kane has done. We should never have got that far in 2016. Kane has never had a big performance in a big game for England, rescuing them against opposition they should wipe the floor with isn't the same

Correct - you could include many sportsmen, local examples to us include Sam Warburton and Geraint Thomas.
