Liverpool sack manager

Sat May 30, 2026 11:49 am

Head coach Arne Slot has been sacked by Liverpool after two seasons in charge.

The Dutchman, 47, guided the Reds to their 20th league title in his debut season but they have struggled during his second year, finishing fifth in the Premier League.

Recently departed Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola is the leading contender to replace Slot.

Wow! I’m shocked by this, as it seemed he’d weathered the storm of a few weeks ago!

Not a great season but the squad needed changing. Just goes to show that in football, you’re only as good as your last game never mind season! :(

I think head coaches get the chop, but who the hell really runs the clubs nowadays, its not them!!!

Father time is a bitch, but egotistical footballers always believe otherwise. Salahs and Van Dykes are on a serious downgrade.
It's a pretty short list of successful transfers from ONLY German football to the Premier League
Isak on paper was mouthwatering, but he got injured
Kerkez worked in Bournemouth's system but looks lost there
And of course, Jota's tragic death was always going to cause issues; nobody knows how the players and fans would react

5th wasn't that bad. Klopp came third and fifth after winning the covid league

I am loving it though, more chaos for the top 6.

Going to be a crazy summer for transfers. Everybody will believe they will have a shot at winning it.

Iraola is a massive gamble. These massive clubs need massive ego's

It looks like Arsenal are in a great position. City may be out of contention for a while, especially if the rumored 60 point deduction happens, Liverpool need a rebuild. Man U look the most stable at the moment

Poor decision in my opinion.
The guy was in charge when they won the title this time last year.
Okay, they dropped off somewhat this season, but still ended up in a Champions league spot.
Liverpool must think they have a god-given right to be champions each season.

Next season will have each manager of the "big six" being younger than 50 years old for the first time:

Arsenal (Arteta) - 44 years
Chelsea (Alonso) - 44 years
Liverpool (Iraola)- 43 years
Manchester City (Maresca) - 46 years
Manchester United (Carrick)- 44 years
Tottenham (De Zerbi)- 46 years

Lived on the back of Klopps work and Klopps team the first season he was in charge.

It was always an ageing team that was going to need rebuilding so why employ him in the first place if they think that CL qualification in his second term is a failure. Do they think that anything but winning the league is suddenly failure? The fans & board have always been an entitled bunch.

Liverpool will open formal talks with Andoni Iraola this week over becoming their new head coach.

The Reds sacked Arne Slot on Saturday, just a year after the Dutchman guided them to the Premier League title.

The club hope to have a successor in place as soon as possible, with departing Bournemouth manager Iraola the leading contender.

Liverpool have considered alternative candidates, such as Stuttgart's Sebastian Hoeness and Lens' Pierre Sage, but the expectation is that Iraola will be appointed.

The 43-year-old delivered the Cherries' finest season to date with a sixth-placed finish - only one spot and three points behind Liverpool in the table - to qualify for next season's Europa League.

Spaniard Iraola announced in April he would leave the club this summer and has also been linked with Crystal Palace, AC Milan and Bayer Leverkusen.

The decision to sack Slot was made by Michael Edwards, Fenway Sports Group chief executive, and Richard Hughes, Liverpool's sporting director, who believe the club needs a more front-foot, aggressive and urgent style of football.

Iraola was appointed at Bournemouth when Hughes was technical director at the Cherries, a role he left in 2024 to join the Reds.
