SOBERING: CHAMPIONSHIP FINANCIAL CRISIS?

Mon Apr 06, 2026 12:54 pm

I saw this on BBC Sport and whilst it’s a long read, it’s very sobering ahead of what we hope will be a return to the Championship next season

Here are some figures that support the seemingly overwhelming path that Championship clubs are hurtling down

We are named in one of them, despite a brief sojourn into League One

As I said in my OP, it’s very sobering indeed! :(

This wasn’t about Tan; it’s a worrying article and I’m a little shocked no one has picked up on its seriousness!

There is currently an review of funding going on but it’s hard to know what can realistically be achieved, so long as clubs and their owners keep ploughing money in to ‘chase the Premier League dream

At some point, the bubble will literally burst and we will become, if we are not already, a USA-style ‘franchise’ series!

Lots to ponder on in this article!

It was him who's created this mess. Debt free remember

I wonder how much of that 95m debt is down to Tan and his 7 year saga with Nantes?

Let's not forget Tan had to pay about 25-30 million just for the Sala transfer because of interest added on for refusing to pay (for a player who didn't sign apparently)

Add to that all the court fees

A monster wage bill for bang average players in past seasons (although should be a lot less this season)

Tan makes the financial decisions at this club

I will never deny that he has spent a lot of money on us but he has spent poorly and that's what happens when you have zero football knowledge

Tan should never have got involved in football it would have been better not just for us but for him also

I think you and Froggy are missing the whole point. This is not about Tan. It’s about the state of football in the Championship and can/should be separated

Tan’s faults are well publicised, as is his ‘promise’ to make us debt-free; but the fact is that anyone taking on a Championship football club must have either or both of (a) have proper ‘plan’ to get to the Premier League, and pretty deep pockets where they can afford to take any losses that come around

I was intrigued by the Bristol City section of the article, where they have spent an incredible amount, yet are no closer to even a brief sojourn to the Premier league than they ever were!

Good management, proper planning, and major injections of cash are a must for any ambitious club nowadays but the price of failure will be immense!
