the game where Chelsea pushed the spiked fence into the park over was 1977..first home game against them in years and after taking a big following up there for the away game earlier in the season... Chelsea brought more for the 84 game but i thought there was more trouble in the 77 game..

Was a crazy day. Stabbing was reported in echo I seem to remember, alongside a pic of a Chelsea fan with blood pouring from his head. I do have a book binder with Ccfc footy reports in and it’s in there somewhere.

I remember that one. Hickey and co came onto the Bob / grange corner and had a thumping.

I was in the City Centre before the game and Cardiff tore the doors of the hotel opposite the Albert and battered Chelsea in there,Cardiff virtually never got touched that day, Chelsea never brought the amount of lads they brought in 1984.

Yes i remember that well, Hickey came on the Bob Bank with no more than 20 lads, they were either thrown over the walls or jumped. But in the streets there was no where near as many involved as in 1984.

Millwall at home in 1975 or 76 was worse.

Shane,

We were young most of us 16-23, I was 19, the main lot of Chelsea’s mob were 25-30 yrs old.
Chelsea were organised and had about 3,000 lads out. About 300 in our Grandstand , others scattered everywhere. With about 15mins to go and Chelsea losing 3-1 about 500 Chelsea left the away end and went right around to the Bob Bank entrance, I personally believe they would of run the Bob Bank as they were organised and had surprised Cardiff. One copper and his dog held the first few back, whilst a steward was able to lock the gate. There had been fighting in all
parts of home ends as Chelsea had gone in them. After the game Ninian Park road and Tudor road was just running battles and Cardiff held there own.

If both sets had fully met that day, Chelsea for me would of been to big for Cardiff , all though I have to say Cardiff had up to 1,500 lads all over the place as well.

Yes those days are gone and gone forever, but that was how it was in them days and it happened so those moaning and saying pathetic etc well that was how our generation grew up.

It is part of British history, like the mods, rockers, skinheads etc etc

Ps I think Chelsea getting back to 3-3 helped as hundreds of Chelsea went back in the ground to celebrate.

ANNIS

Makes you laugh these days the young bucks would give it everything but legg it down the road thr last time I saw Cardiff lads piling off the bus exit door was at Burnley and they sparked a few Burnley lads out after Burnley where picking on a few Cardiff lads I was stuck in the car with the missis saying don' t you dare. Ha
Yes glad that's long gone the last thing you want to do is hurt someone you have never known ,but obvious if someone does exactly that to you you have to defend yourself but as you say that's how it was in the 70s we were all standing behind in the stands getting squashed pushed to the front,
opposing fans running across the pitch to the home end I went to a local near me in the 70s
Shrewsbury v arsenal in the cup fans were thrown off the bridge into a swollen river mental.

During this period nearly every away game was never incident free. It was a great time growing up and some of the fans I met during this time are still friends to this day.

The thrill of the casual culture, the excitement of buying your first Stone Island coat ( for me it was 1992). I remember being thought of as French and interviewed on French television at Wales v France game probably because our fashion was so different the time.

Lots of casual fans pretended they were part of this scene but there was a tight group of around 50 from the docks , Llanishen , Grangetown and other places where we all socialised between Thursday through until match day.

It was a cultural thing and a great time to grow up in.

If you were not into this sort of thing at the time , you were probably a trainspotter.

Glad it’s over now of course being a father of course , but to slag it off probably suggests that you were in the trainspotter phase.

Started watching the city from 71/72 season, used to go with my mates from Cwmbran and to be honest that's just how it was in them days. Not many clubs brought big numbers to Ninian park (apart from the obvious teams) and even at most away games you'd feel fairly safe because Cardiff would have such big numbers of "lads" who could more than look after themselves. I went to Millwall 4 times (twice in 70's + twice in 80's) that was always scary apart from one year when Cardiff took a huge mob. The only team to come on the grangend and stay were pompey, they got in the ground early and police stopped city fans getting at them. Many, many great memories of meeting city fans from all over Wales, some not with us anymore. Thankfully them violent days are gone but it was part and parcel of following football in them days.

Very True Joff,

Yes once you have children and times have changed dramatically it’s 100% time to move on.

the game where Chelsea pushed the spiked fence into the park over was 1977..first home game against them in years and after taking a big following up there for the away game earlier in the season... Chelsea brought more for the 84 game but i thought there was more trouble in the 77 game..

Pretty sure a city fan was stabbed on Sloper rd after the 77 game.

vaguely remember something about that... but no net, no mobiles and 3 TV channels most what you heard was word of mouth... there was trouble all day with pockets of both sets of fans bumping into each other with a few Cardiff on Cardiff scraps thrown in... mad.. and couldnt believe they got that fence down in sloper road....20k in for it too..

Was a crazy day. Stabbing was reported in echo I seem to remember, alongside a pic of a Chelsea fan with blood pouring from his head. I do have a book binder with Ccfc footy reports in and it’s in there somewhere.

Annis will be after you for those reports mate....

I remember all the crazy ones from the 70s and 80s at NP. Spurs, Everton FA cup 76/77, Chelsea 77, 79, 84, Pompey 84,

That’s when I started going, it was very different from Scotland, where the hooligan/casual scene came a bit later. Was amazed what the Old Bill let you away with, compared to the Glasgow Polce.

Jock, you Barry lads had quite the mob back then in the 70's. Have fond memories of travelling away with you lot, Veggy, your good self, orgy, Mayday, Tater, Munday, Powsey, Owen etc, and the Tonyrefail lads who shared the bus, always a good day out and a lot of laughs.

Having watched the city home and away for 65 years,,i seen some stuff..i was there 79 and 84....in 84 i was going down slopper road and got mixed up with chelsea fans,,,one of them was trying to get over the fence and spike went into his hand as he was pulling himself up....Along came another chelsea fan who thought the guy on the fence was a cardiff fan,and he stabbed him in the side....Both chelsea fans....it was crazy, managed to get away from them injury free.....Seen some stuff... :bluebird: :bluebird:
