The squad voted for the captain

Sun Aug 03, 2025 11:38 am

Brian Barry-Murphy:

"The squad did a vote for the captaincy, I always do that.

I also always check the vote to make sure it's legitimate. I've done it myself where you vote for your best friend or stuff.

But the vote seemed very legit and very fair.

Calum Chambers was the outstanding candidate and clearly Rubin was the next best.

So it seemed very sensible to reward Rubin with that responsibility.

We will educate him and Calum on what that role means and how they can make it better as a player, as a leader and as a captain.

You can make someone a captain, even someone like Calum Chambers, you might assume they know about leadership but it's not always the case.

We'll educate them on the different things it involves and how they lead the group into having an aligned way of thinking on the pitch as we go through the season."

I was very dubious about BBM, but I'm steadily coming around to the fact that although he doesn't have that much Managerial experience, he's a very good logical coach, and he's showing all the attributes to become a very good manager.

As above, although both may not have Captain and leadership experience, he's going to work with them to help them develop it and become his leaders on the pitch.

I think it was a good choice, and they will improve and make a good job of it.
