4-3-3

Fri Jun 13, 2025 9:41 pm

Heard an interview with BBM where he said he normally prefers to play with a 4-3-3 formation, although also said he is adaptable.

If it is to be 4-3-3 then what players that we already have do you think are suited to that system and which could struggle in that setup?

One player we know that will understand that system, if he stays, is Alex Robertson. He worked with BBM at Man City and did well.

It will definitely be a different viewing experience for us, having watched 4-2-3-1 for the last two seasons. In my opinion, it will be better to watch - as long as it works, obviously.

I use Warnock's promotions 433 as my barometer

ACM - (Bryson) think Robertson and Joel Colwill are good shouts
Sitter (Gunnar) - Ralls, Wintle, King
CM (Ralls) Rino, Turnbull, Rubin

CF- (Zohore) Salech, Simic, Ette
RF - (NML) Davies, Nyakuhwa
LF - (Holiett) Tanner, Ashford

Back 4 pretty standard

I don't see Rubin as an attacking CM., he isn't athletic enough to press, so we need to repurpose or sell him. I'm also not sure if Ashford is quick enough for wide forward roles. He likes it inside.

I am sure it will be far more sophisticated than this.

My fave to watch, when the team are drilled and know how to execute
I'd love this.

Do we think we've got the legs for a 4-3-3? I think we'd have to strongly recruit and get rid of some of last years lead-boots players if we were to play this formation??

New keeper

Kpakio
Fish
Lawlor
Bagan

Rinohmota
Robertson
Turnbull

Davies
Salech
Ashford

Rubin Colwill played well deeper away against Villa, could he play there long term.

Rubin was brilliant at Villa, against elite players.

That could be the position for him.

Looking at our current squad on Cardiff app. I know it’s not so easy to sell player as the player holds control really but this is optimistic thinking and the funds gained from the sale would pay for the new players.

GK - new ball playing GK needed
RB - Kpakio (sell NG)
CB - Fish (sell Daland)
CB - Bagan/lawlor (whoever BBM rates more)
LB - Bagan/new CB (sell chambers)
DCM - wintle/new 6
CM - Turnbull (really think he’ll flourish under attacking possesion manager)
ACM - Robertson/new player (sell Rubin Colwill and Robertson if new ACM is bought)
LF - O’Dowda ( Salech will be fed off his crosses)
RF - Isaak Davies
ST - Salech (sell Robbo)

Other notable sales would be Ollie Tanner, Cian Ashford and Chris Willock. Everyone else not mentioned like Ralls Rhino etc keep as squad players.
Feel if we sold all players mentioned they would fetch some hefty fees which could get real quality for BBM

So no backups? I wouldn’t be selling Rubin or Robertson. I’d keep Ashford too. Ng I’d keep unless you can get a replacement.

Just put up a thread about BBM and Robertson maybe not getting on as we thought.

But I would have Robertson as an automatic starter if not. He knows the manager and was apparently top quality for Pompey in this league before his injury.

Just responded in the thread.

My answer:

BBM is pretty much saying he worked hard on coaching him to get to his current level, onto him to push him harder. Just as any good coach would.

And Robertson was in contact with BBM when he first joined signed with us, so definitely maintained a good relationship after the Man City days.

Ofc you will have backups but I would be getting others other than the ones I have stated to sell.

The ones stated to sell I have chosen because they will have clear value and we will get something for that could easily pay for a better replacement. Personally I also think they’re overrated which is why I would get a league one replacement for them.

The likes of NG, Chambers, Colwill, Tanner, Ashford, Robertson, robbo, Daland. All fall into that category to me as overpaid and overrated for a league one team or just may not suit our new BBM team going forward.

So yes I would sell them all get a half the sale price replacement who suits BBM style of play on half the wages too, ofc football isn’t that easy but just an idea

About Robertson, ofc BBM may rate him higher than me which is why I maybe thought about keeping him and why he is 50/50 maybe in the team or maybe sell but to me his sale value could be potentially very good and we could offload him for a decent fee to championship when he wasn’t as good imo as everyone thinks he was last season.

Ofc everyone named could easily prove me wrong next season but this is my current thoughts.

I’m with you in getting rid of the players like Chambers, Robinson etc., but not Robertson.

How would you get better than Robertson when you’re in League One?

And Robertson fits BBM’s system, he was coached at Man City to play this system. Don’t forget Robertson was great in this league for Portsmouth. When he’s fully fit and under good coaching, we will get the best out of him again.

Tbf that’s a great point I am mainly judging Robertson on previous season under Bulut and Riza whereas like you said under BBM in a league he has experience he could be a stand out out performer, I really hope so as well!
