Southampton Manager Says he enjoyed his Swim Away

Mon Dec 04, 2023 7:46 am

Southampton boss Russell Martin says he enjoyed his "10 seconds at the end" after performing the controversial 'swim away' celebration following his side's 2-0 win over Cardiff City on Saturday.

Martin, former Swansea City manager of course, took to the pitch at St Mary's post-match and did the swimming action while passing the away fans, who had given him a rather fiery reception all afternoon on the south coast.

The new Saints head coach had a perfect record against the Bluebirds during his stint in the Swansea.com Stadium dugout, registering four straight wins as Swans boss over their rivals, and he reminded the visiting contingent of that fact by putting four fingers up and waving in their direction.

After his first Swans game in charge against Cardiff, he performed the 'swim away' action in front of away supporters in Landore, which led the Football Association to look into the incident.

The 'swim away' gesture references a violent clash between rival supporters following a derby encounter in the 1980s.

On Saturday night, Martin said: “I had my time at the end. They had there’s over the 90 minutes so I enjoyed mine for 10 seconds at the end.

“I’m sure there will be people who disagree with that but I choose to feel everything and enjoy that. If you want to hammer me for 90 minutes then I’m allowed maybe 10 seconds at the end."

The win made it four victories out of the last five for the Saints, moving them to fourth in the Championship table.

No problem with it.

We can give him shit all game we should expect some back.

I would have very much enjoyed 50 big Russians being outside the away section and saying hi to the knobbers singing England run from Russia.

Just a shame it's all really a myth perhaps he should learn the facts.

A player who’s taking stick for 90minutes yes but a manager really should be above it. He’s Southampton manager his time with the Jacks has passed.

Obviously we don’t like it.

But from his point of view, you can understand it.

Fans can’t expect to be able to abuse players/managers and get nothing back.

If his time with the Jacks has passed, why do Cardiff fans continue to give him grief?
Fair do's, if our fans insist on dishing it out to him, he is within his rights to respond.
We shouldn't give it out if we can't take it back!

Wherever he goes, whatever he does... he'll be under our skin.

Nowt wrong with it, I believe we were chanting some poor-taste songs, so after giving us a spanking he has every right to enjoy his 10 seconds.

He will enjoy it even more when the Jacks get relegated this season.
