Mark Drakeford confirms latest Covid rule changes as move to alert level zero continues
Andrew Forgrave

Wales is to move ahead with the next phase of its planned easing of Covid restrictions, First Minister Mark Drakeford has confirmed.

This means that from today (Friday, January 21), all outdoor activities in Wales will move to alert level zero.

If Covid cases continue to fall, all indoor activities will also fall into the same category a week later.

However Wales will remain out of step with England, where face masks will cease to be legally required from next Thursday.

In its next three-weekly review of Covid regulations, on February 10, the Welsh Government will assess whether they still need to be worn in most public indoor places beyond this date.

Similar consideration will be given to the self-isolation rules in Wales.

Mr Drakeford said the country’s transition to alert level zero, by January 28, could still be derailed if the public health situation deteriorates.

Latest public health data suggests Wales has passed the peak of the Omicron wave and coronavirus cases are falling back to levels similar to those seen earlier in the autumn.

There have also been reductions in the number of Covid-19 patients in hospital.

He said: “We remain cautiously confident the public health situation is heading in the right direction and next week we will be able to complete the move to alert level zero, unless the situation changes for the worse.”

From Friday, January 21, Wales will ease restrictions on all outdoor activities.

This means:

Crowds will be able to return to outdoor sporting events.

There will be no limits on the number of people who can take part in outdoor activities and events.

Outdoor hospitality will be able to operate without the additional measures required introduced in December, such as the rule of six and 2m social distancing.

The Covid Pass will continue to be required for entry to larger outdoor events attended by more than 4,000 people, if unseated, or 10,000 people when seated.

The Covid Pass is required in all cinemas, theatres and concert halls which are currently open.

On Friday, January 28, Wales is due to complete the move to alert level zero.

This means:

Nightclubs will re-open.

Businesses, employers and other organisations must continue to undertake a specific Covid risk assessment and take reasonable measures to minimise the spread of coronavirus.

The general requirement of 2m social distancing in all premises open to the public and workplaces will be removed.

The rule of six will no longer apply to gatherings in regulated premises, such as hospitality, cinemas and theatres.

Licensed premises will no longer need to only provide table service and collect contact details.

Working from home will remain part of advice from the Welsh Government but it will no longer be a legal requirement.

The Covid Pass will continue to be required to enter larger indoor events, nightclubs, cinemas, theatres and concert halls.

The Welsh Government has said its considered approach to Covid restrictions has saved the lives of thousands of people in Wales.

Mr Drakeford claims that if Wales had the same positivity rates as in London, the figure would have been an extra 69,000 people with Covid.

Mr Drakeford added: “We are in this position thanks to the efforts of everyone in Wales and our fantastic vaccination programme.

It is important that everyone continues to follow the rules and the guidance to help keep themselves and their loved ones safe, including taking up the offer of a booster vaccine if they haven’t already done so.”

I watched the charlatan today and wanted to throw the remote at the TV the man really is a grubby little excuse for a politician who like any card carrying member of the looney left cannot admit when he is wrong.

His restriction over the Christmas New Year holidays have yet again been put in place based on a worst case scenario model by Swansea University and like ALL previous models have been shown to be bullshit by REAL WORLD data.

The charlatan even put up a graph, based on a ONS study, which shows Wales had 1 in 20 people with covid per 100,000 on 7th January and the same study showed in England there was 1 in 25 people per 100,000 with covid. He claimed this clearly shows his futile restrictions worked. But at what cost?

Wales has a population of 3.3m so the difference between 1/20 & 1/25 per 100k is that at 1/25 Wales would have had just another 165 people on that day with Covid. So with hospitality settings closed down, sports stadiums empty and even Park Runs with over 50 people not allowed Wales had just 165 fewer covid cases.

That came at a cost of around £1m for each case  when you look at the amount of income lost to business.

The man is a fecking idiot and just doesn't understand if you make a mistake once or 500 times it's still a mistake and following models to form policy makes him a liability to Wales.

As a hospital worker I can say that the hospital are most certainly not empty and their are still designated Covid wards in most health boards. UHW has 2 wards currently as does Princess of Wales. Not sure of any other as I've not worked in them

He showed a graph saying we had slightly less cases than England but it also showed that for the few weeks before we had more case than England, so it averaged out that we had the same but at a cost of millions to the Welsh economy, he made a massive mistake but won't own it!

The graph he showed again today is based on a model, he does love his models, created by the ONS and is based only on home infections. On the ONS site it carries a caution flag on the Welsh figures because of small sampling data so should be considered best estimates. Also today he said he wasn't seeing the same "Scientific" data that the UK Government are seeing which is strange because Dr Rob Orford Chief Scientific Advisor to the Welsh Government is part of Sage meetings. Is Drakeford saying Dr Orford fails to give feedback or is Drakeford telling porkies.

I know what my money is on.

ONS figures aren't per 100,000. They are extrapolated for the whole population so 1 in 25 in Wales means 112k people, not 165.

Edit - so the difference between 1 in 20 and 1 in 25 in Wales is about 15000 people
