Peter Whittingham honoured to pass John Toshack scoring record as he says Cardiff City have made Championship 'statement'

MONDAY 21 FEB 2016

The 31-year-old, who has been at Cardiff for nine years, made it 88 goals for the Welsh club with his brace against Brighton

Cardiff City’s Peter Whittingham said he was honoured to pass the scoring record of Bluebirds’ legend John Toshack.

The 31-year-old, who has been at Cardiff for nine years, made it 88 goals for the Welsh club with his brace as Russell Slade’s side destroyed high-flying Brighton 4-1 in the Championship on the weekend.

It moved Whittingham one above Toshack and the Bluebirds’ FA Cup Final hero back in 1927, Hughie Ferguson, for the number of goals scored for Cardiff with the likes of Brian Clark and Carl Dale now in his sights too.

Modest Whittingham said he was delighted, but insisted his aim now was to keep focussed on helping the Bluebirds get into the play-offs this campaign.

“John Toshack is an absolute legend here and was a huge player for this club, so to get anywhere near someone like that is a huge achievement for me,” said Whittingham, who now has four goals in his last four outings.

“People have mentioned it, but right now I’m just focusing on the season as a whole, trying to score goals and help the team as much as I can. It might not look like it, but I do enjoy scoring.”

The taming of Brighton put Slade’s side very much back in the play-off hunt, they are now just four points away from the top-six and face another huge test tomorrow night as they head to Middlesbrough.

Whittingham believes the rest of the Championship will have taken note of his side’s victory over Brighton and that he and his teammates now travelled to Boro with real self-belief.

Whittingham added: “Yes, it’s a statement from us. I think other teams will look at that and think, ‘Wow that’s a huge result for Cardiff.’ It’s so nice to be in and around the play-offs. We go to Boro high on confidence now, we’ve just played a good team in Brighton and we’ve played them off the park so there’s no reason why we can’t go to Middlesbrough and be confident.”

Id like to see him get to 100 goals by time his contract runs out end of next season. Certainly do-able if he continues to play the position he has been lately.

Hopefully doesnt get pushed out of the door to save on wages and gets to see out his contract so he can get a testimonial.

He certainly deserves one.

I believe he is on 408 appearances which is equal 7th (Billy Hardy) in the all time appearance list with another 6 to reach Fred Keenor.

Only 8 players in our history have topped 400 appearances for the club but reaching that milestone has pretty much gone by with little recognition. I believe he is also 6 appearances away from 500 career appearances which is again a massive achievement.

A true professional and great servant to our club.

its funny you should say that as i actually emailed the club a few months back asking if they were going to do anything for his 400th appearance (no response). He's the only player in my lifetime who has played 400

Still remember the days where I couldn't imagine the starting XI without Peter Whittingham!

He was THAT important back then and has still been a decent player all his time here at CCFC.

Top professional! :thumbright: :ayatollah:

I have always said that Whitts would come good this season but some on here said he was past it blah blah blah and only a few like myself had belief in the City legend and stuck by him. Where are all the Whitts haters now??? Hmmmmm not a word from them since he has regained his form :ayatollah:

I don't think he has just regained form, but played in a position where he can seriously hurt the opposition.

From DJ's freedom to kill, to Malky playing him in a free role which ultimately ended up as a glorified sweeper to Ole's sitting midfielder then Slades insistence for him to be a 442 CM Whitts has never publicly moaned. True City legend :ayatollah:

Ironically this 4231 or lopsided 433 (not sure how that works) may be the best formation ever for his talents and with his pecker up could seriously affect our end of season push. :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy:

I am 33 and if I live to be 103 I don't think any bluebird will surpass Whitts for me. My favourite player ever to pull on our jersey. Was a joy to see him scoring and playing so well the weekend.

Has shown great loyalty to the club and I can never remember him in any trouble. It will be a sad sad day when he finally walks away from Cardiff. Hopefully sees out next season and gets his testimonial. I know I will definitely be coming over from Ireland for it.
