' Ole gives his blessing for one of City's stars to leave City '

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gives Gary Medel blessing to leave Cardiff City, admitting: 'He deserves to play above Championship level'
Wednesday May 14th 2014

By Steve Tucker

He has a relegation release clause and everybody expects him to leave but today, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has given the biggest indication yet that Gary Medel has played his last game for Cardiff

Gary Medel is heading to the World Cup next month

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has given the broadest hint yet that Gary Medel will be leaving Cardiff City this summer, saying: “He’s a top player who deserves to be playing at a higher level than the Championship.”

Medel, Cardiff’s £9m record signing last summer, has been strongly linked with a transfer to Turkish club Besiktas.
He is certain to be in Chile’s World Cup squad in Brazil when they take on Australia, Holland and Spain during group matches, but Solskjaer insists there have not yet been any offers for the former Sevilla player.

Solskjaer does, though, admit: “Gary is a top, top player who deserves to be playing at a higher level than the Championship and he has proven that.

“Nothing has come up yet, no offers have been received for Gary.”

More: Ole tells us what he knows about the Championship

Santiago-born Medel, 26, made 34 Premier League appearances for the Bluebirds this season, operating mainly in front of the back four.

He missed the final match at home against Chelsea because of a groin strain and it looks likely he won’t play for the Bluebirds again.

It is thought Medel, along with Steven Caulker, has a relegation release clause in his contract.

If the right offer comes in it looks likely he will move on, with Besiktas favourites to sign him.

Solskjaer confirmed he has had enquiries from other clubs about some Cardiff players, saying: “There have been some calls, but nothing firm.

“We have a big squad and it’s not sustainable to have that amount of first-team players on contract.

“I have spoken to players, had chats to them.

“The wheeling and dealing has already started.”

Medel has faded away in the last third of the season, I know opinion is divided on him, but for me he played a vital role for us this season, the linchpin(spelling???)in our midfield

He definitely faded in the last third of the season, which may have been to do with the new manager coming in or the writing on the wall that we were getting relegated or that he just ran out of steam in his first Premiership season. He certainly hit the floor running when he arrived. Is a very good player when playing with the right players around him.

Overrated. Same as caulker.

good player but over weight, and we most certainly over paid.

We are in the championship for a reason, don't buy this he deserves to be playing at a higher level! If so many of these players are too good for the championship we wouldn't av been relegated!

Caulker and medel were at fault for a number of goals we conceded like many others!

As for what caulker said, championship will harm his England chances I disagree with that, when bothroyd was showing good form he was selected from the championship! As are many other internationals!

I don't buy this at all.

The problem with being a new Premier League team is you cannot put out a team of Premier League quality players immediately.

Medel and Caulker were fighting a battle accompanied by lesser quality players. They were fire fighting and then get blamed for not being a one man team.

Had we stayed up. Next year we would have added another couple of Premier League quality players.

It takes a few years to get a squad of the right quality and if you can survive relegatiin in that time you are onto a winner.

both had talent but neither experience caulker is not a captain it shows how desperate and bad we were as a team we Cardiff City out in the unknown of the premiership scared and alone miles from home in the championship.

we put our faith into caulker a young lad whos an average england defender and a foreign overweight chile international

Decent player, but not the be all and end all. We payed over the odds for him and his ages will not work in the Championship.

We paid to much for him.
For less money i'm sure we could have got a player who could pass left , right and forwards

Season we've had, we could have used a bit more distinctly average.

Our best players this season in my opinion whre noone, mutch and marshall. Medel and caulker put in their share of poor performances aswell.
Id wish them well but wouldn't be that upset if either left to be honest

OGS is a clever man. Surely he would not put the same word out for Dæhli. Now he gets it out that Medel is on the market, and speaks him up on the way.

Medal's lack of fitness cost us the game away to villa who scored after he conceded a free kick chasing after one of their players. We were in the game then. He is not made out for British football. He is suited to the slow passing Italian/Spanish type game. I don't believe I saw one killer pass from him all season and his shooting was woeful. I would bite anyone's hand off with a bid of £6M or more.

Yep, he wants to sell medel. Rumor is he is trying to persuade Marshall to stay can't say he doesn't deserve to play above championship level now can we? :laughing6:

I get stick in work from the Jacks with them saying "ho ho ho did you know your best 2 players cause a clause in their contracts, there going!" im like "Yea...."

There were good players, nothing amazing. They never stood out at times like Marshall, Mutch and Dhaeli started to at the end, there 3 i would be upset to loose. Not Caulker or Medal.

We got promoted without them and can do it again

Don't know about mutch he went missing at the end of the season when it mattered the most. But daehli and Marshall are the players with the highest ceiling in the squad IMO. Be gutted if we loose either of them.

This was to be expected, but we just need to wish him well as he moves on. He has been part of our campaign so just draw a line under it.

His transfer fee will represent some vitally needed funds for new blood. Spend wisely and crack on I say!

Agreed with both comments.

Medel would prove to be a much better player than many CCFC fans realise he is with top players around him. It's not his job to be a flair player or a match winner. He job is ball retention and simple distribution. He is very good at that at has a top level football brain.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer resigned to losing Cardiff ace Gary Medel
CARDIFF manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is resigned to losing Gary Medel this summer.

The Norwegian had previously said he would do everything he could to keep hold of the club-record signing despite the Bluebirds' relegation to the Championship.

“Gary is a top, top player who deserves to be playing at a higher level than the Championship and he has proven that”
Ole Gunnar Solskjaerr
But Medel, who has a release clause in his contract, is already attracting the attentions of Besiktas and Malaga as he prepares to head to the World Cup with Chile.

And Solskjaer accepts the 26-year-old is too good to play in the second tier.

The Bluebirds have triggered a £3million release clause for Bournemouth’s Lewis Grabban.

The 26-year-old scored 22 goals for the Cherries in the Championship last season.

He was certainly not the 'Pitbull' he was made out to be! I wanted to see him flying into tackles, getting in the oppositions faces, winding up referees, even the odd red card! But he hardly even got booked, and rarely mixed it with the midfielders, sitting too deep to even be involved at times except in panic defending

I'd be surprised if Medel stayed here, or went to the Premier League. I think he'll go back to Spain, or a European country. He doesn't quite suit the style of English football

As a very good player he is, he doesn't half slow down our attacks, he also never takes a touch and turns to make a pass on occasions when there's someone in space.
