Don Cowie : We'll get the job done

Fri Mar 08, 2013 6:07 am

DON Cowie is confident Cardiff City can press on and clinch automatic promotion to the Premier League, saying: “This is the best dressing room spirit I’ve known in my career.

“We believe in our squad and that in the coming weeks we can get the job done.”

Scottish international Cowie, 30, has made 22 Championship appearances this season and hasn’t started in the last two matches, but says: “We are in this together. There are no cliques and if somebody has something to say they say it to whoever it needs saying to.

“We have a reasonably big squad and to try and keep everybody happy can be difficult. But we work hard for each other every day and that speaks volumes as to how professional this group is.

“I am pretty confident we can get back to winning ways in the coming weeks and extend our lead at the top.

“We have to get the job done now. It’s going to be tough, but we feel confident and ready for the challenge.”

The Bluebirds, five points clear of nearest rivals Watford, are without a match this weekend with scheduled opponents Barnsley playing Manchester City in the FA Cup and manager Malky Mackay is awaiting fitness reports on captain Mark Hudson and Craig Bellamy, who are both hoping to be fit for next Tuesday’s home clash with Leicester.

“They are dangerous opponents who have had a good season,” Cowie told Cardiff City Player. “We will have to be at our best against them, but we go in believing in ourselves.

“We have three matches left in March and have to get stuck into the nitty-gritty with not long left to go this season and pick up as many points as we possibly can.

“It’s going to be a busy month in terms of fixtures during April, but we’re ready for that.

“We know what is needed and we’ll work together to reach our target.”

Mackay is now approaching the final run-in during his second season in charge of Cardiff City and Cowie says: “It was a big job when he came in.

“A lot of players left and the personalities and egos went with them when the manager came in.

“He brought in the right sort of players and in my career this is the best dressing room I’ve been in.

“We know what is needed and everybody is ready for our next test, against Leicester City next Tuesday.”

I would like to see cowie in the middle tbh. He gets a lot of stick but hes a workhorse and if we persist with whitts i think cowie compliments him well and free's him up to play. Especially in a midfield 5.

Just a thought

Agreed, not very effective when he was played on the wing, however there is enough cover to play in the wide areas now.

Would like to see him back in the middle to free Whitts up, he always gives 100%, and let Whitts get forward where he is much more effective in, than the position he is being asked to cover now.

It looks like MMs comment a few weeks ago about not getting the "jitters" is getting to the Don Cowie and the other players. The annual slump has started and its always hard to change things round late in the season. 5 points clear with a game in hand will quickly go, especially with games againd Leicester, Watford and Hull. Cardiff have been way out in front for so long that the pressure is on them to maintain top spot, but the chasing pack have no pressure. If previous seasons are a sign of what is to come for Cardiff, then the Play-Offs are a reality. Exciting times for Watford, Hull and CP and the "jitters" for Cardiff.

I think Cowie in the middle gives us more energy and cover in middle and will allow Whitts to roam.

Never lose faith in Whitts......

I wouldn't be surprised to see Cowie start wide against Leicester just to help the middle two out.

Sick of players telling us every week how they are going to "do the business" and then deliver so little on the pitch. I think it's best to keep their thoughts to themselves until it's all over.

It's hard to say our players have delivered 'so little' this season - we're 5 points clear with a game in hand

What do you want - promotion in February?

Would like to see Cowie get involved in our next game. His energy will give us a boost at this point of the season, I think he's a key player :ayatollah:

Don Cowie is not everyone's favourite and gets plenty of stick but when we has played in the middle he has freed up whittingham to play with a lot more freedom our best away performance against Blackburn had Cowie in the middle, Ipswich away Cowie played in the middle also.
