' JOSH MURPHY? '

By Tom Coleman

Monday 11th June 2018

Who is Josh Murphy?

Murphy is a 23-year-old winger who currently plays for Norwich City - a club he first joined alongside his twin brother, Jacob, as an under-12 back in 2006.

Jacob has just completed a full season in the Premier League with Newcastle United, and it seems the pair are set to face off against each other next term.

After rising through the ranks of the club's academy, winning an FA Youth Cup with the Canaries along the way, Murphy signed his first professional contract at Carrow Road in 2013, making his debut in the League Cup match with Watford later that year.

It was in the 2013/14 season that Murphy would earn his first taste of the Premier League, making nine appearances before the club were relegated at the end of the season.

But Murphy continued to stake his claim for regular first team football the following season, making 18 appearances in the Championship and scoring one goal.

However, the arrival of Alex Neil in January 2015 saw his opportunities limited, and he was eventually loaned to Wigan two months later, where he stayed until the end of the season.

Murphy was loaned out again for the 2015-16 season, this time to Milton Keynes Dons, and even scored the winning goal on his debut against, you guessed it, Cardiff City in a 2-1 victory in the League Cup.

He would go on to become the club's player of the year, netting seven goals in 47 games.

Canaries boss Neil sat up and took notice, and Murphy became a regular for Norwich on his return, emerging with a reputation as one of the Championship's brightest young talents.

Despite the Scot later making way for Daniel Farke in the Norwich hot seat, Murphy has continued to be a regular face in the Norwich starting XI.

Where can he play?

Murphy's best position is as a left winger, but he has been known to play on the right too.

Last season occasionally saw him utilised as a centre-forward or secondary striker.

Such versatility will have certainly caught the eye of suitors, although it has to be said that his best performances last season were arguably on the left as he made three assists in all competitions and scored nine goals.

The local view

Michael Bailey, Reporter for Norwich City.

He's had a bit of stick from fans here, but when he's good he can be unplayable.

I think many fans often wonder why he can't play at his best week in week out and that's where some of the frustration comes, it was the same when Jacob was at Norwich.

But if and when he does move to Cardiff it will be interesting to see what he could do as it's a great opportunity to play in the Premier League.

In terms of the price tag, I think it's a fair to good deal for all involved really. It's certainly a good deal for Norwich, and for Cardiff there's much more money in the Premier League now and £10 million plus is about the going rate for a player like Josh.

Norwich have already said that they want £20m-£25m for James Maddison - a player that has never played in the Premier League, so that gives some perspetive.

Why have Cardiff signed him?

Boss Neil Warnock was known to be keen on snapping up a 'classy winger' ahead of his side's assault on the Premier League, particularly with the number of outgoings expected.

Yanic Wildschut, in many ways a similar type of player to Murphy, has not done nearly enough to tempt the Yorkshireman into moving for a permanent deal, while fellow wideman Jamie Ward is likewise unlikely to see his loan spell from Nottingham Forest made permanent.

It leaves Junior Hoilett and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing as the only real options in terms of out-and-out wingers, unless of course Warnock believes Anthony Pilkington has done enough to deserve a chance in the Premier League.

Either way, there is certainly a case for bringing another winger on board.

Additionally, Murphy's experience playing up front means he could be seen as possible competition for Kenneth Zohore and Gary Madine.

Should Cardiff complete the deal for Murphy it would be their biggest transfer since they brought Gary Medel to the club back in 2013

Why the price tag?

While it could well be the biggest amount Cardiff have spent in some time, there is little question that Murphy is capable of producing moments of genuine class.

His stunning 25-yard effort against Aston Villa back in April rightfully got everyone talking, although he's still arguably got some way to go before he can really say he's the finished article.

It's a state of affairs that boss Daniel Farke noted back in November, where he hinted that Murphy had the potential to play for the very best teams in the land.

“He is full of ability. Right now, if he was on a really high consistent level he would not play for Norwich City," he said.

"At his age, Manchester City or Liverpool would buy him for £25m. He is not on this level but we will work with him to try and bring him on that level."

Given his excellent track record in getting the best out of players, Warnock will really fancy his chances of bringing Murphy up to that level and, should he succeed, will see £11 million in the current landscape as something of a bargain.

Twin brother Jacob has shown promising progress in the Premier League

The verdict

While he has turned in some impressive performances, Murphy certainly has far more to offer, but the flashes of brilliance displayed during his time at Carrow Road point to exactly the sort of player that Warnock likes.

Having worked wonders in turning previously unknown Mendez-Laing into one of the Championship's best wingers, the Yorkshireman will feel he has plenty to work with again if he gets Murphy through the door. It's a move that appears to make a lot of sense for all parties.

Nevertheless, the price tag will still bring with it a level of expectation, and patience may subsequently be in short supply if he doesn't hit the ground running.

Then again, Cardiff fans would do worse than to look at how brother Jacob has fared at St James' Park, where he endured a poor start in a Newcastle shirt before eventually settling into life in the Premier League.

It could take time, but there's definitely a Premier League player in there somewhere.

Sounds a decent fit. Bit wary of the purchase price being bandied about, though could recoup most of it if we needed to sell. Hopefully if a deal is struck though, there aren’t resale clauses and other nonsense sneaked onto the contract.

This seems to be a move that’s going to happen. Overpriced from what I can see but I’m not worried, it’s not my money.
Speedy wingers are very often inconsistent and that seems to be the case with Murphy but let’s hope Warnock can improve that part of his game - if it comes off of course!

It really looks like it’s about to happen as genuine reports say he has been with Warnock since Sunday. :bluebird:

Yeah I just think that was an easy assumption because he rates him in his book and he is available. We may take him on loan eventually but can see us paying any kind of decent fee for him at his age.

CARDIFF CITYBIG MONEY FEE AGREED AND MEDICAL COMPLETED: NORWICH CITY CLOSE TO FINALISING TRANSFER DEALPublished 3 hours ago on 12/06/2018 By Jay Williams

According to sports journalist Pete O’Rourke, Norwich City attacker Josh Murphy has completed a medical at Cardiff City and is expected to finalise the move shortly.

Reports yesterday revealed that Cardiff had agreed an eight-figure sum, around £10m, for Murphy and a move could happen today.

The 23-year-old is set to follow his twin brother Jacob Murphy to the Premier League, one year after Newcastle United swooped for him.

Newly-promoted Cardiff are looking to bolster their options ahead of the Premier League campaign and Neil Warnock is clearly keen on Murphy as he is ready to splash a big transfer fee to land him.

The former England youth international – who plays on either wing or as a striker – grabbed 11 goals and three assists in all competitions last term, alerting some Premier League teams to his talents.

Murphy was also attracting attention from Brighton, Fulham and Middlesbrough but the Bluebirds have stolen a march on their rivals by submitting a hefty fee.

With the medical now passed, it appears that it is only a matter of time before an official announcement is made regarding this transfer.

The Verdict

In the space of two transfer windows, it looks like Norwich will lose their three star attacking midfielders in Murphy, Alex Pritchard and James Maddison.

Although they have swooped to sign Emi Buendia, Daniel Farke still needs to use this money (and the money received from Maddison’s expected sale) and reinvest that to improve his attacking midfield options.

As for Murphy, whether he will be able to make an immediate impact in the Premier League remains to be seen; he will have to improve his consistency to make a difference in the top flight and justify his price tag.
