Only the contract holder can unlock an iphone.
Think Vodafone are free anyway, all you have to do is contact customer service ask for unlocking department, and explain you want your old phone (or new phone) sim free and they will unlock it for you.
Your benefit is that it will knock the value of your handset up by about 25%
