CARDIFF BETTER THAN BARCA

THURSDAY, 29/11/2012

by Jonny Moulds, Shoot's Cardiff blogger

Forget your Barcelona’s, your Real Madrid’s and your Manchester United’s, the title for the ‘Best Home Record in Europe’ goes to Cardiff City.

The Bluebirds previous victory over fellow promotion challengers Middlesbrough marked the Bluebirds ninth consecutive victory at home – a record that is unrivalled across the continent.

There’s a few who come close, like the Netherlands’ PSV who have seven from their seven at the Philips Stadion, a record matched by Partizan Belgrade of Serbia and Levksi Sofia of Bulgaria.

And there are a trio of teams who can claim second position to the Bluebirds in terms of home comforts with eight out of eight on their own patch; Romanian giants Steaua Bucuresti, Dnipro of Ukraine and compatriots Shakhtar Donetsk.

But not a single team across more than 50 divisions has delivered better form at their own grounds.

The relative strengths of the different divisions cannot be ignored, of course; its one thing seeing off Birmingham and Blackpool it’s another beating Borussia Dortmund and Bilbao.

These sorts of statistics underline the incredible achievement of the fans in making the Cardiff City Stadium a fortress from which an attack on promotion could be made.

And when you consider not even the most dominant teams in Europe can keep perfect domestic league records then it shows the base Mackay’s side has.

For example Barca and Madrid, Real having drawn at the Nou Camp and Valencia holding Jose Mourinho’s men.

Despite Cardiff’s incredible start to the campaign, it’ll take a little longer to come close to the true untouchable teams at home, Shakhtar having not lost at the Donbass Arena for almost a full calendar year.

Manchester City have not surrendered three Premier League points in just shy of two years – a run that stretches 35 games and counting; the fact both are champions in their respective divisions shows how home form is the catalyst to finding success.

And while the records are all well and good – and nice for Bluebirds to brag about – beating Dave Jones' Sheffield Wednesday this weekend, will mean a lot more in terms of the promotion points it offers than the kudos as home kings of Europe. :D
