U21s v Brighton

Mon Nov 05, 2012 11:57 pm

Just back from the U21s game with Brighton.

Was a bit of a scrappy affair to start, both sides cancelling each other out, with Brighton having the majority of the possession.

Brighton tended to pass the ball around and had very little penetration against what looked a pretty solid City back line. They played some decent football at times but were resstricted just one attempt on goal when Anton Rodgers ballooned a shot over the bar and out of the ground.

Cardiff had few chances in the game, young Luke Coulson made good runs into the opposing half causing Brighton some problems in and around the box but none came to any fruition. Steven McPhail had an indiffernt start to the game, and his passing did not always find a city player. Cardiff started to get a hold on the ball and began playing some nice football with some decent movement forward but lacking the final ball into the box, and were restricted to just a couple of attempts at goal when Jarvis had a shot go wide to the right of the post and Jesse Darko ballooned one well high and wide of the target.

Brighton took the lead midway through the first half when a bit of poor defending allowed Charlie Oatway to push the ball through the box onto the advancing George Barker to slide the ball past a despairing dive from Parrish. Until this point the Cardiff back line had defended well with Ben Nugent marshalling his defence well with Deji Oshilaja looking pretty solid.

HT Brighton 1 Cardiff 0

The second half carried on as the first half with both sides playing some nice football but lacking in the final third. Brighton pushed on looking for the second goal but the Cardiff back line held firm to keep them out.

Cardiff continued to make forward movement bat as with the first half the penetration into the box was lacking. Some good runs through the middle from Deji Oshilaja led to some nice approach play around the box, but failed to trouble the Brighton keeper Peter Brezovan.

As the half went on Cardiff dropped deeper and deeper allowing Brighton the space to start attacking the penalty area, Ben Nugent picked up a yellow card for a very clumsey challenge just outside the box, which resulted in Brighton shot on goal saved well by Parrish. From the resulting corner Cardiff were lucky not to concede a penalty when Tommy O'Sullivan raised his arms in the box but the ref waved away the claims.

Brighton continued to press but some stout defending from Declan John and Theo Wharton kept them at bay. Elliot Parrish made another fine save down low to his right to keep out another fierce drive from Barker.

Cardiff looked to bring on fresh legs with replacements for McPhail and Nugent bringing on Anthony Bell and Kane Owen. This had little impact on the game and the game ended with a 1 nil win for Brighton.

It was good to see Stephen McPhail out on the park fro 70 mins or so helping him back to full fitness, but some of his passes were a little wayward, but a good shift all in all.
Ben Nugent looked a solid defender but tired towards the end, a good prospect for the future.
Luke Coulson looked very good on the ball and was good going forward from defence.
Deji Oshilaja looks a good defender, with the added bonus of penetrating runs straight through the middle.

All in all not too bad a display dispite the defeat, and some talent for the future out there.

hope i got all the names right,

I believe I was the only Cardiff city supporter in the 100 or so attendees.
