IS NATHAN BLAKE RIGHT ?

' Cardiff have never won anything in modern times & dont now look like title winner ' by Nathan Blake

YOU look at Cardiff City at Bolton and you ask one simple question: ‘Do you believe you can win the Championship?’

Observing the Bluebirds’ away form this campaign so far I’m afraid to say I believe the answer right now to that is no.

Sure, you might talk to the players and they will tell you confidence is high, that they believe they can do it, and this and that, but I think right now they are lacking real belief. True belief.

It could even be a hangover from the Dave Jones era.

People praised Cardiff then for going close and getting to the play-off final, but they never won anything.

Everyone is in football in the end to win things and Cardiff in modern times have never won anything at all.

There has to be a fear, a concern, where people are left thinking, ‘can we really do it this time?’

Manager Malky Mackay and his staff have to address that problem as soon as possible because if not, Cardiff are going to become by far too reliant on their home form and it is really going to cost them.

The Bluebirds are going to lose at home at some point that is inevitable. This month they’ve got Hull and Middlesbrough up.

Now they might lose one and get back to winning ways straight after, but if they start to lose one, draw one and then lost another at home, that coupled with their away form could prove a major problem.

I really don’t think their away form is down to formations or even the players out there.

It’s a psychological thing for me, a mental problem that must be addressed.

I’m not sure even a change in the personnel in the side would be the answer right now.

I see that young striker Etien Velikonja has been talking about how much he wants more first team action and I see that he scored a hat-trick for the under-21 development side last week which is fair enough.

But that does not really give you the full picture.

That’s a game against kids effectively and for all we know Velikonja might not be performing up against the likes of first-teamers like Mark Hudson and Ben Turner in training.

That is very much a decision for Mackay who has all the information at his fingertips unlike us looking from the outside.

But against Bolton we could see what was going on and I don’t think many of us were too impressed.

Let’s face it Wanderers might have been a Premier League team last season, but they did not play like a Premier League team against Cardiff.

When they had to put on the pressure in the second-half they went very direct and they were there for the taking if Cardiff had any real belief.

Even once David N’Gog was on, with a bit more positiveness Cardiff could have won that game.

Bolton do not even look like a top six side at this point.

Dougie Freedman has a real job there with my former club looking like a work in progress at this point in time.

But Mackay’s men looked tentative, unable to decide whether to get a hold of the game like they have been at home and go for it or try and sit back and catch Bolton on the break.

That is a clear sign of a lack of belief.

I thought in parts Cardiff played well again.

I thought Craig Noone, who got the Bluebirds’ goal was good, but too many players look like they are waiting for things to happen rather than being prepared to grab hold of the match by the scruff of the neck.

It’s tricky for Mackay now, he has to get inside his players’ heads now, do something to change that mindset and do that as quickly as possible.

It’s times like this he and his staff can really come into their own.

He has to know how to deal with each player, which buttons to push with each individual when it comes to getting the desired response.

Mackay has to know when someone needs an arm around their shoulder and when someone needs to be wound up.

This month now is going to be a big test for Mackay and his men.

As we say, their excellent home record is going to come under a severe test, but more importantly three of their five games in November are going to be away from home starting with a trip to Charlton tomorrow night.

They are putting pressure on themselves already in a way.

You look at their trip to The Valley and you start to think that a point is not really good enough for them and they need to win it.

Sure, their home form has been brilliant, but if Cardiff’s away form continues as it is now it is just not going to sustain them at the top through to December and January.

The Bluebirds need to mentally sort themselves out when they are on their travels and it is a transformation which needs to begin right now.

I think nathan is wrong on some points here.
1 we have 3 or 4 players out that would make our squad much better.
2 I believe the players do believe in themselves
3 bolton certainly looked a top 6 team on saturday
I didnt bother reading it all some of it is just pointless..

The simple answer is we aren't very good. title winning teams are strong away from home.
on paper we have the best squad in the division,
but take away maynard and bellamy who will only pay around 20 games this season,
We have one of the worst strike forces in the championship,

We are extremely lucky to be sitting top, malky needs to spend 3/4 million on striker and maybe a defender in january +loan player to cover injury's if we have any chance of promotion

When we play away the players look nervous, look at the Bolton game - everytime we got the ball in the back 4, no matter what the situation, it was hoofed upfield. Every. Single. Time. Ben Turner's shortest pass that I rememebr seeing was like 40 f*cking meters. If we were at home we would have played it around, worked it forward then all of a sudden found a gap and pounced. But no, away it's aimless balls to Helguson who is just isolated. I don't know if it's Malky telling the players to be more cautious, or is it's just their mentality, but it needs to change. It's like they're worried about being on the ball because they'll f**k up.

To be champions, we better start thinking like champions. Saturday we should have gone into the game with the attitude, we know you are good but we are better. We are going to play with pace and get in your faces, giving you no time on the ball. It up to you to try and stop us. But instead we go in with fear, worried that they were in the premiership last year, sat back and let them boss the tempo. We were afraid and showed them too much respect.

No guts no glory.

Nathan Blake has Alzheimers, one week he's like we're going up as Champions, the next he's all doom and gloom

This!

As Carl said last week. We need to go into away matches with some arrogance and attitude?

He's spot on apart from his terrible grasp of the English language.

"Never won anything in modern times"
