Burnley aim to get manager in place prior to Saturday

Thu Oct 25, 2012 5:49 am

Burnley are aiming to have a new manager in charge of their team in time for Saturday’s visit to Cardiff City Stadium.

Former Burnley player Terry Pashley, 55, is the club’s caretaker manager who is preparing the players for their trip to South Wales.

Burnley are searching for a successor to Eddie Howe, who left the Lancashire club and returned to AFC Bournemouth where he had started his managerial career.

Former Watford manager Sean Dyche, who worked alongside Malky Mackay at Vicarage Road, and current Falkirk boss Steven Pressley are joint favourites for the job. Mackay offered Dyche a job on the coaching staff at Cardiff.

Dyche stayed at Watford and was appointed manager, but was replaced by Gianfranco Zola when new owners took charge of the club.

Reports in Burnley suggest joint chairmen John Banaszkiewicz and Mike Garlick favour different men to take over at Turf Moor, while St Johnstone team boss Steve Lomas, a former Manchester City and West Ham midfielder, also seems to be a contender.

Their decision, it seems, is likely to be between Dyche, Pressley and Lomas.

Portsmouth’s Michael Appleton was an early favourite to become Burnley’s fifth manager in five years, but no longer appears to be on the short-list.

Burnley have considered around 20 candidates and have had second interviews with a number.

Ipswich have parted company with manager Paul Jewell by mutual consent.

Tuesday’s 2-1 home defeat to Derby sent Town to the foot of the Championship table, 10 matches on from their solitary league win this term against Watford.

Jewell, who took charge in January 2011, suggested he was close to quitting following the weekend loss to Hull.

and did not appear at the post-match press conference.

“Since he first walked through the door here, no one has worked harder to bring success to this football club than Paul Jewell,” club owner Marcus Evans said on Ipswich’s official website.

“Unfortunately his outstanding commitment has not been rewarded by results on the pitch and, having spoken with Paul at length, we feel it’s best for him and the club if we go our separate ways.”
