Formation - Can't work it out

I understand Malky trying to play safe playing 4-5-1 away from home but what is the point when we are a totally different team playing attacking 4-4-2. That's when we are playing at our best. We have conceded goals for fun at Bristol, Palace and now again today playing 4-5-1.
