MALKY WANTS NEW PLAYERS IN JANUARY

Thu Oct 18, 2012 9:53 pm

CARDIFF CITY boss Malky Mackay will look to strengthen his table-topping squad in the January transfer window in a bid to finally deliver the Premier League dream for the Bluebirds.

Mackay, who has guided City to the summit of the Championship after 10 matches, is keen to add new recruits as he aims to avoid the type of late season decline that has scuppered previous promotion challenges in the Welsh capital.

The Cardiff boss revealed he hopes to strengthen his defence when the transfer window opens, and he confirmed he would have no qualms over bidding for a top-class striker if the right man becomes available.

Mackay already boasts one of the strongest squads in the division following a £10m summer spending spree, but he admitted there is still a lack of depth in certain areas.

“There are areas I would like to strengthen, but I have to justify my budget,” Mackay said.

“Are they going to start or are they going to be cover? If they are just going to be cover, can I justify the amount of money for a cover player?

“But, we certainly need more cover defensively.

“Up front we had a lovely mix before the unfortunate injury to Nicky.

“That is another area where if somebody came up that we thought ‘yes, definitely’ then great but not just for somebody to come in and add to what is there.

“It needs to be another Nicky Maynard.

“Reading did it with Jason Roberts.

“It was a massive gamble for them because he wasn’t playing for Blackburn at the time and it was a hell of a lot of money in terms of wages.

“But what a signing that turned out to be.”

Mackay admitted his team, who were beaten by West Ham in last season’s play-offs, must go one better this year, and he challenged his players to show the their mettle over the coming months.

The Bluebirds face a gruelling schedule of four games in the next 10 days, starting with Saturday’s trip to Nottingham Forest.

“We have to try and do better than we did last year,” he said.

“There are 10 or 12 clubs that will think they have a chance of promotion and we have got to be one at the end of the season.”

“We have a better chance than last year because we have a stronger squad.

“Consistency comes in to it, as does luck. Can you keep your team fit?

“It is a tough, relentless league but we have to be a team with confidence and a bit of swagger.

“When teams come to Cardiff City Stadium they have to know they are in for a difficult day.”
