Whitts close to Goal scoring top 10

Tue Oct 02, 2012 8:05 am

Peter Whittingham is two goals away from joining Cardiff City’s top 10 goalscorers of all time.

Whitts, the Bluebirds top scorer this season on six, currently stands two goals behind 10th placed Chris Pike and says: “I may not show it, but these things do mean a lot to me.”

City’s midfield playmaker has been in outstanding form and has taken his tally over the last five years to 74.

“There are 50 penalties included, so it might not count,” said Whittingham. “But I love to be involved in these stats whether it’s appearances or goals.”

His delivery from set-pieces has been deadly this season, but the composed, laid-back Whittingham isn’t one for hours of practice on the training ground.

“I enjoy shooting and it comes naturally to me,” he says. “The more times you hit the target the better chance you’ve got. I hit the bar or post a few times last season, but right now I’m happy they are going in and long may it continue.”

Whittingham isn’t one to celebrate his goals and is glad his team-mates run to him when he finds the net.

“I don’t know what people want me to do – jump up and down on the spot?” says Whitts.

“I’m just not into celebrating goals to be honest.

“If the lads didn’t run up to me it would look really creepy and I would just end up walking back to the halfway line.

“But I am happy they are going in. Put it that way.”

Team-mate Craig Bellamy smashed one in against Leeds United from a free-kick just outside the penalty area – and Whitts is under pressure to stand aside at times.

“He put one in against Leeds which was on his side and superbly struck,” said Whittingham. “We aren’t going to come to blows about it but we both enjoy going for goal.”

Bluebirds fans love to chant ‘He does what he wants’ when Whitts lines-up a free-kick and they were ecstatic when he smashed home his free-kick during a 3-0 win against Blackpool.

“There’s nothing better than the fans singing your name,” he says. “When they were singing it during the Blackpool game it was amazing.

“It’s even better things do come off for me.”
