Whitts out to deliver Premiership dream to the Bluebirds

Tue Oct 02, 2012 8:03 am

In-form Peter Whittingham insists he is determined to help deliver the Bluebirds’ promotion dream this season.

Cardiff City’s six-goal top scorer is just two more strikes away from joining the club’s all-time top-10 scoring list.

And ahead of tonight’s clash against Birmingham at Cardiff City Stadium the Bluebirds’ ace playmaker said: “I cannot think of anything better than Cardiff City being promoted this season.”

Nuneaton-born Whitts, who started his playing career with Aston Villa, is the key man in midfield for Malky Mackay’s City.

This is his sixth season with the club and that step up to Premier level has been elusive so far. City have gone close time and again, but missed out each time.

Premier League clubs have repeatedly tried to tempt him away, but Whittingham says: “I’ve stayed because I want to get Cardiff City into the top flight.

“That’s been my aim all along.

“I don’t think about speculation linking other clubs with me. This is simply a case of me wanting to get Cardiff up there.

“If it could happen this year, I could not think of anything better to be honest.”

The Bluebirds have won their first four league matches at Cardiff City Stadium this season and victory against Birmingham tonight would equal their best ever home start to a season.

They have already equalled the 1959-60 team, who won their first four home games as they earned promotion to the top flight, and City are now one short of the 1946-47 season.

Manager Billy McCandless steered his team to five successive home wins at the start of that season.

Whittingham and his class of 2012 are focused on earning another three points at Cardiff City Stadium tonight – a result that could leave them looking down on the rest of the Championship.

Meanwhile, the Bluebirds have confirmed Alan Whiteley will be stepping down from his role as chief executive, as reported in yesterday’s Echo.

Whiteley’s position at Cardiff City Stadium is to be filled by Simon Lim, who will take over the reins as acting CEO for the months ahead following a handover period.

A club statement says: “The decision to introduce a new CEO has been reached in light of that substantial commitment from Tan Sri Vincent Tan and Cardiff City chairman Dato Chan Tien Ghee, both of whom having expressed a desire to have a greater degree of control and involvement over the day-to-day running of the club.

“Simon Lim’s appointment is seen to be the best means to achieve this with stability now having been achieved off the field.

“Alan Whiteley has been asked to remain on the board of directors to ensure a smooth transition at the club, while long-term senior financial accountant Richard Thompson will also take on the role of financial director in an initial acting capacity.”

Major investor Tan Sri Vincent Tan said: “I would like to place on record my thanks and respect to Alan for the way in which he has held the office with dignity over the last year.

“His professionalism and hard work has helped to improve club operations behind the scenes, and from here, with the hard work of a number of key people we will look to build on his legacy in the months and years ahead. All connected to Cardiff City Football Club owe Alan a debt of gratitude as he leaves his post with our sincere best wishes.”
