Cardiff City boss Mackay hails best performance yet after Blackpool win

Sep 29 2012

Cardiff City 3 - 0 Blackpool

Cardiff City manager Malky Mackay hailed his side’s best performance of the season after they moved second in the Championship with victory over Blackpool.

Defender Matthew Connolly scored twice while top scorer Peter Whittingham netted his sixth of the campaign to complete a comfortable win.

Cardiff have now won their first four games of the season at the Cardiff City Stadium, emulating their start to the 1959/60 campaign when they were last promoted to the top division.

Mackay said: “That was our best performance of the season when you consider the team we were up against.

“They are most people’s favourites to win the league with the squad they have but we scored three goals, created a lot of chances and kept a clean sheet.

“It was great to get our fourth home win. The stadium is rocking with the fans right behind us and we’re looking a real goal threat from all areas of the pitch.

“We got our tactics right, executed the plan perfectly and got stronger as the game went on. We could have scored even more had we taken a few different options but I’m delighted.”

The result was a second successive defeat for Blackpool, who made seven changes to the team beaten last week by Huddersfield.

That did not prevent manager Ian Holloway blasting his defenders for handing Cardiff an easy ride after conceding three “soft” goals from set-pieces.

Holloway said: “In the last two games we have passed and moved and Cardiff’s crowd were on top of their team at the start, but goals change games and that’s what Cardiff did.

“The goals we conceded weren’t good enough from our point of view. Cardiff played well but they won’t score easier goals in their lives than those they got against us.

“Normally we create chances but it wasn’t until they sat back after the third goal that we really got going.

“We had a big blow losing both Gary Taylor-Fletcher and Tom Ince on Friday after niggles and they have both been important for us.

“We had a spell like this last season so we just have to put our heads down and get through it.”

Blackpool started brightly but despite dominating possession it was the hosts who opened the scoring on 17 minutes.

Blackpool failed to clear the resulting corner and when Whittingham and Craig Noone released Craig Bellamy inside the box, the Welsh international found Connolly unmarked to grab his first for the club.

Ten minutes later Whittingham doubled Cardiff’s lead, though Blackpool keeper Matthew Gilks will be furious at allowing the 35-yard effort to creep inside his near post.

Cardiff let a two-goal lead slip at Crystal Palace last week but there was to be no repeat when Connolly rose at the far post to head in Whittingham’s corner and wrap up an impressive win.

Blackpool were very frustrated and it showed in some off the reactions from the attackers as the ball in the final third was really poor. Tactically we shut them down and played our game.. hats off to MM. :ayatollah:

We stayed on top of them when we took the lead, thats exactly what we need to be doing now we have bellers and noone to compliment whitts
Blackpool pretty much let whitts do what he wants and you simply cant give the best player in the league the freedom that they did
