Gary Bell's headed penalty: Bill Shankly

Thu Sep 27, 2012 10:41 am

Bit of football trivia.
In 1972, Bluebirds full-back Gary Bell once scored a goal from a penalty! It was against Hull, his shot was parried in the air by goalkeeper Jeff Wealand. As the ball looped up, Gary headed it into the net.

Also Bill Shankly played for Cardiff on one occasion. It was October 3rd 1942. During the old wartime days, when professional football was suspended, footballers would be invited as guests to play for clubs depending on where they were posted. It so happened that Shankly (a Preston player at the time), who was also a Scotland International, happened to be invited by Cardiff City to play for them. He duly obliged and played for them against Lovell's Athletic, a Newport Club. But Shankly, on coming to know that Lovell's players were paid more than three times what Cardiff were paying him for guest appearances, switched loyalties and never played for Cardiff again.
The Bill Shankly and the Cardiff Connnection doesn't stop there. Cardiff was the first team to play Liverpool in the Shankly era. After the great man had taken over on 14th December 1959, Cardiff turned up at Anfield on the 19th and left for home having thrashed them 4-0. :ayatollah:
