Malky Mackay expects Cardiff City to bounce back from Palace horror

by Terry Phillips, South Wales EchoSep 25 2012

Malky Mackay is expecting a big reaction from his Bluebirds after their second-half horror show at Crystal Palace.

Cardiff City’s three-match winning run ended in a 3-2 defeat at Selhurst Park and they now face back-to-back home matches against Blackpool this Saturday and Birmingham City four days later.

“I have a fantastic group here and every one of them knows what is needed now,” says Mackay.

“We are only three points off top place in the table and have the chance to build on that in successive home games.

“We have earned solid results in front of City fans so far this season. It’s important we continue that in terms of performances and results.”

Mackay’s men have earned three successive Championship home wins so far, beating Huddersfield, Wolves and Leeds.

City players will watch the match against Palace again before training at their Vale of Glamorgan Resort headquarters this morning, although Mackay says: “We won’t have to look long and hard to see how and why we lost. There were basic defensive errors.”

City have no new injury problems from the match at Selhurst Park, while they have been lifted by the news Ben Turner, Rudy Gestede and Stephen McPhail have all fully recovered from their knocks and are in training.

Turner and Gestede will play for the Bluebirds’ development team against Charlton Athletic at home tonight (7pm), while McPhail is likely to have a few more days training before playing again.

Mackay will be joined by City players Craig Noone and Andrew Taylor to watch world boxing champion Nathan Cleverly in an open training session at Cardiff City Stadium tomorrow (2pm-3pm).

Fans are invited to join them and tickets, available from the stadium offices, are free.

World light-heavyweight champion Cleverly will defend his title when he takes on Ukrainian Vyatcheslav Uzelkov at Cardiff’s Motorpoint Arena on Saturday, October 27.

A boxing ring will be set up next to the stadium dug-outs for Cleverly’s sparring session against British and Commonwealth boxer Ovill McKenzie.

“Everybody at Cardiff City follows Nathan,” says Mackay.

“He is a big Bluebirds fan and we’ll be cheering him on in his title defence.”
