Fears grow over Nicky Maynard injury as Cardiff City await scan results
Sep 19 2012

THERE are fears within the Cardiff City camp that striker Nicky Maynard’s knee injury could be more serious than was first hoped.

The 25-year-old, who was manager Malky Mackay’s most costly summer signing at £2.75m from West Ham, was stretchered off during the Bluebirds’ 2-0 win at Millwall on Tuesday night after jarring his leg in the turf.

Maynard was seen by a specialist on Wednesday night and a scan was taken with Mackay and his medical staff expecting to receive the full results of that on Thursday morning.

But there are concerns that Maynard, who has only made three starts and is yet to find the net for his new club, could be facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

The Bluebirds head to Crystal Palace on Saturday as they look to continue their good start to the campaign and are certain to be without Maynard for their second trip in a week to south London.

Maynard has overcome a serious knee injury in the past, although this new problem is in the other knee.

In August 2010, whilst at Bristol City, he underwent knee surgery and missed more than half of the season before returning to full fitness.

After the Millwall match Mackay said Maynard would receive the best possible medical care with the Bluebirds.

“I think Nicky’s done great since he came in,” said Mackay.

“We’ve got a good medical team here and a good medical set-up in Cardiff. He’ll be getting the best treatment.

“We’ll wait and see. There’s no point talking about it until we actually get facts.”

Maynard’s’ absence would see Craig Bellamy potentially pressed into action at Selhurst Park after the 33-year-old, who is still returning from a calf tear, did not travel to Millwall.

No point in worrying too much yet...he was seen walking Yesterday which is a good sign but the scan will reveal the true facts...problem is these injuries could mean a month or up to a year out...its a huge margin of difference depending on the severity of the injury....I am hoping that its short term and Nicky is back as soon as possible.

It would be great if we could get him back by at least January, anything else is a bonus.

Who knows though, with the strength of our team, if it is long term the next time he plays it could be in the Premier League.Malky was quoted as saying he didnt expect to get him, so he already thinks thinks this team is good enough without Maynard. The sooner hes back the better though.

On the bright side it gives other players a run out and a chance to prove what they can do.If they know Maynard is due back and their on a time limit it could bring out the best in them.

I hope its good news today!

He was seen walking to his car and then driving away at the training ground yesterday.

I only strained my knee ligaments and was on crutches for a week, no way I could walk specially day after it was agony. So good news if he can walk. Remember Aguero looked bad knee injury but he walked off pitch and back training now

I just looked at the footage on player and to me it doesent look like he jumps at all, which I read somewhere. He runs between two defenders looking up at the ball, and then it looks like his leg collapses under him as hes running, and he immediately signals as he hits the deck that he needs help.

It doesent look half as bad as I pictured it, but presumably at the pace he was running if you jarred your knee it could be serious.Perhaps his studs were in the turf as he looked up and across at the ball, which caused him to twist his knee, which caused his leg to collapse.I suppose it would only take a split second to give you a pretty bad injury if you were sprinting. I think Malky said he caught it in the turf so this must be how he twisted it. He didn't look comfortable as they carried him off.

Out for the season. Wish the guy a speedy recovery but this is a real bonus for the promotion chasing teams :ayatollah:
