Nicky Maynard potential injuries he could have

Tue Sep 18, 2012 11:19 pm

It looks like Nicky Maynard has sustained a painful injury. The big question now is, how serious could that be? Here are some likely possibilities, lets hope its just a strain.

ACUTE KNEE INJURIES

Torn ACL (also called Knee Sprain or Torn Ligament) (Anterior cruciate ligament injury)

Twisting the knee is a common cause of overstretched or torn ligaments of the knee.
Full recovery may take several months and varies from patient to patient. High-impact activities must be avoided until the knee has recovered sufficiently.ACL injuries occur when an athlete rapidly decelerates, followed by a sharp or sudden change in direction (cutting). ACL failure has been linked to heavy or stiff-legged landing; as well as twisting or turning the knee while landing, especially when the knee is in the valgus (knock-knee) position.

Torn Meniscus (Torn Cartilage)

Not all meniscus tears require surgery. Some people can function with a torn meniscus. Pain and swelling often resolve within 6 weeks, even though the meniscus hasn’t actually healed.

Ruptured Tendon (Torn Tendon)

A cast is usually worn for several weeks. When the leg is immobilized, muscles and tendons weaken. Rehabilitative exercises help restore strength and flexibility to the knee/leg.

Muscle Strains

The main muscles supporting the knee are the quadriceps and hamstrings. Increasing the duration and intensity of exercise or any activity too quickly often cause muscle strain. Mild muscle strains heal quickly.

I think we may aswell acept there is a good chance we have lost him for at least a few weeks. Lets hope it is nothing serious and wish him well. :(

Maynard then landed awkwardly after jumping with Karleigh Osborne and was carried off in the 67th minute.

ACL injuries occur when an athlete rapidly decelerates, followed by a sharp or sudden change in direction (cutting). ACL failure has been linked to heavy or stiff-legged landing; as well as twisting or turning the knee while landing, especially when the knee is in the valgus (knock-knee) position.

Coupled with his previous knee injury I fear the worst. Its going to be a good loss for us if hes out for the season. :(
