'Key Man' Helguson Favourite For Cardiff City Axe

Tue Sep 18, 2012 11:04 am

Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay will have numerous options to re-fresh his starting XI for tonight's trip to face Millwall with the likes of Joe Mason, Don Cowie and Aron Gunnarsson all desperate to regain their places having featured only from the bench lately.

Add to that Saturday's 'super sub' Craig Bellamy and the mysterious Kim Bo Kyung - yet to make his debut, while the likes of Craig Conway, Etien Velikonja and Filip Kiss can't even get into the matchday squad!

Mackay will be tempted to being fresh legs in, especially given that this is the second game in just a few days and following an International break that meant tiring travel and games for some, and a lack of match practice for others.

He can eithere look at the players likely to come in, of which Mason aand Kim would be favourites (with Bellamy being looked after), or, look at those within the starting XI who could make way. Top of that list is surely veteran Heidar Helguson who has tired considerably during all of his appearances to dtae.

helguson is undoubtedly effective, and an important part of the way we play. He will battle, compete in the air and hold the ball up to bring our dangerous midfielders into play. However, he was unable to play a big part in the victory over Leeds, looking a little off the pace and isolated. Additionally, the former QPR striker played the full 90 minutes so to start another game so soon would be a big ask.

Bellamy, Mason or Velikonja could come in as a 'like-for'like', even though we have nobody in the same mould as Helguson. More likely, is that an extra midfielder could come in for the away game - with Nicky Maynard asked to play along in attack. Maynard would be ably supported by Noone, Smith and co. from out wide and his pace and movement so far suggests he could well impress in that role.

Mason has played in an advanced midfield role, and would get my vote. Alternatively, Cowie or Gunnarsson have some on to shore up midfield in the latter stages of late and both looked energetic and keen to impress.

Not since returning to Championship level in 2003 have Cardiff City had so many high qwuality options. It will be a tough ask for Malky to rotate, freshen and keep the performances and results as we would like. Tough decisions, but welcome all the same!!

I wouldn't mind seeing velikonjana (cant spell it im not checking)
He's got pace desrves a run out, masons due a goal as well could be handy to have him on the pitch, mason and maynard likely scorers and maybe one from midfield or bellamy assist,

my prediction would be 2-1 or even 3-1
