CARDIFF OFFICIALLY SIGN NICKY MAYNARD

Fri Aug 31, 2012 9:30 pm

At last - Nicky is a bluebird!

One of the best strikers we've ever signed imo.

Cardiff City can confirm that striker Nicky Maynard has joined from West Ham United.

Twenty-five year old Nicky joins 'City on a three year deal and will be registered in time to be considered for selection against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday. He will take up squad number 23 for the 2012/13 season.

Born in Somerset, Nicky began his professional career at Crewe Alexandra in 2005 after coming through the Railwaymen's famed youth setup. He signed for Bristol City in 2008 for a deal reported to be in excess of £2 million, going on to score 45 goals in 124 appearances for the Robins over a four year spell.

West Ham came knocking on the door of the much-coveted forward during the January 2012 transfer window, securing Nicky's services as they looked to secure promotion back to the Premier League. That objective was achieved in May as the Hammers conquered the Championship Play-Offs, with Nicky contributing four goals along the way.

Yes!!

Hopefully play 2 up front now we've got him. Fantastic signing.

Maybe try a 4-1-3-2 type formation with gunner holding whitts in the centre (still playing the 'quarterback' role) 2 pact wingers and HH and Maynard up top..

Always a player I rated highly, a major threat when he played against us, never thought in a million years that he would ever be a Cardiff City player, I'm over the moon. :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Guys just wanted to again post on your latest signing, I'm a Bristol City fan who lives in Cardiff and a very big admirer of Nicky but reading some of the comments in here worries me... "best signing Cardiff have ever made".... don't do that, trust me the more you hype him up the more pressure you put on him and he's a confidence player. It'll do him the world of good to hear you all cheering him on and getting behind him but if you expect amazing goals week in week out and he doesn't deliver you need to give him time. If you expect too much too quickly and he doesn't deliver you'll only end up resenting the guy and making him play worse.

As a Bristol City fan I can tell you now and I'm sure Nicky would agree that his last months at Bristol City were hell for him because he lost his form mainly down to him losing his confidence when many of the Bristol City fans began to boo him or jeer him.

He's not the best signing you've ever made, he has a lot of potential but you also have to be real, he'll need time to settle and even if he does hit the ground running there will be periods where you see him miss a lot, if he does and you turn on him he'll give up, it's his only weakness.

I personally think it's great he's signed for you, he's a player I admire a lot and so I'll pop over to watch him play at some point and I think someone he can learn a lot from is Craig Bellamy as Bellamy is determined and keeps going even when no-one backs him, Nicky needs to learn that from someone and if he does he could go a long way.

Good luck to him and you, just don't put too much pressure on the lad and he'll come good.

Thanks for that insightful post Spike. You've probably seen him play more than most on this forum.

I hope we heed your words and back him to to the hilt. I for one will, and am sure with support and confidence he might be the key to unlock the Premiership door. :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:
