Bellamy's bad boy image unwarranted

Thu Aug 30, 2012 3:34 am

PETER Whittingham insists Cardiff City team-mate Craig Bellamy’s ‘bad boy’ image is totally unwarranted.

Bellamy, who is back for his second spell with his home-town club, has had numerous run-ins with the authorities in the past and often finds his reputation going before him in the game.

But Whittingham, who is now playing alongside the 33-year-old for the second time, said all that was far from the truth.

“Craig’s got this kind of bad reputation, but it’s completely the opposite,” said Whittingham.

“He’s his usual self. He’s brilliant with the lads, to be honest.

“He comes in, he speaks to the lads, he speaks to the young lads and he shows everyone what it takes to become an all-round professional.

“He tells the lads where they can improve and what they are doing well. It’s brilliant.

“It’s just great for the club to have him here. For this club to sign players like him is good for prestige.

“It’s remarkable for the club really and hopefully it will pay dividends this season.”

Malky Mackay’s side are looking to bounce back to winning ways with Wolves the visitors in the Championship on Sunday.

In their last match Cardiff lost out 4-2 at Bristol City in the Severnside derby.

Bellamy missed that game with a calf problem, but Mackay is hoping to have his start man at his disposal on Sunday.

Centre-half Ben Turner, who also missed the defeat at Ashton Gate last Saturday, is also hoping to be ready to return to action after picking up a foot injury.

Wolves, now under Norweigian manager Stale Solbakken, were relegated from the Premier last term.

They have started life in the Championship with a defeat at Leeds, a win over Barnsley at home and a draw against Derby at Molineux last Saturday.
