Whittingham wants a more attacking role

Wed Aug 29, 2012 12:14 am

PETER Whittingham has revealed that he wants to play further forward.

On the day that Whittingham extended his Cardiff City contract until 2015, the playmaker suggested that he is keen to take on a more attacking role under manager Malky Mackay.

Whittingham has operated just in front of the back four during City’s low-key start with many fans questioning the wisdom of playing someone who once scored 25 goals in a season so deep.

And Whittingham, 27, admitted: “Everybody knows how much I like to get forward.

“I speak to the manager every day about where I play and where I need to improve my game.

“I am grateful for that and there are aspects where I need to do better than I am.

“Everybody knows I like to chip in with goals and assists but at the moment I am being asked to play in a deeper role – and that’s what will happen.

“The manager wants me to play there and I do get on the ball a lot, but on the other hand I am probably too easy to pick up.

“If there is a man on me we need to start rotating a little more.

“I just want to carry on the form I have had for the last couple of seasons.”

Former England Under-21 cap Whittingham had two years left on his contract but has now agreed a new and improved deal which takes in a further year.

“I’m happy with Cardiff City and have shown that by signing a new contract,” he said.

“Everybody was frustrated after the defeat against Bristol City last weekend.

“It was a frustrating match as we made individual errors and conceded sloppy goals – and that wasn’t like us.

“But it’s far too early to be panicking.

“We have earned four points from three league games and there are a couple of big home matches coming up.

“We need to bounce back after the Bristol City defeat and our first chance is against Wolves this weekend.”

A veiled criticism of the managers tactics there perhaps?

One certainty is if you have a midfielder who can get you 20+ goals in a
season... you play him in a position where thats more likely to happen!

It only makes sense. QB1 is not whittingham. He gets closed down so fast being that deep there's literally no point in playing him.
