Cross-platform instant messaging apps

Here's the deal. At the moment I often use whats app messenger to text mates or the mrs because it's free.
I am noticing that Whats app messenger is starting to become really buggy. Messages not sending and me not receiving messages etc. Are there any other cross-platform instant messaging apps that I can download that are any good?

umm live profile, ebuddy, skype etc and they're all free! see of you can get them!

Funnily enough Whatsapp have just released a patch, hopefully they will resolve your issues.

Whatsapp is fine. Don't have any issues at all.
