Just saw it on sky sports news. Ex arsenal trainee and QPR defender

Cardiff City close to signing QPR defender Matthew Connolly
Aug 20 2012

QPR manager Mark Hughes has accepted an undisclosed bid for Connolly, who is aiming to complete a hat-trick of promotions.

Connolly, 24, was in the Rangers team who won the Championship title two years ago - and was on loan with Reading when they were crowned champions last season.

Barnet-born Connolly is a former Arsenal trainee who had loan spells with Bournemouth and Colchester United before a £1m transfer from the Gunners to Rangers in 2008.

He has made 116 League appearances for QPR.

Manager Malky Mackay is preparing for City's League match at Brighton tomorrow as his recruitment department work to complete the Connolly deal.

Mackay has confirmed there are no fresh injury worries after City's 1-0 win against Huddersfield Town last Friday and he will take an unchanged squad to Brighton.

Stephen McPhail (hamstring) and Kadeem Harris (calf) are the only players in the treatment room, while South Korean signing Kim Bo-Kyung is still awaiting his work permit clearance.

"Kim is in South Korea completing some paperwork," said Mackay.

"His transfer to Cardiff City is complete, but there is some administration to be sorted.

"We expect Kim to arrive in Cardiff next weekend, which means he will miss our matches against Brighton and Bristol City, but we hope to have him with us well before our next home match against Wolves."

Cardiff City (v Brighton, probable): Marshall, McNaughton, Hudson (capt), Turner, Taylor, Cowie, Gunnarsson, Whittingham, Mutch, Bellamy, Helguson.

Played a lot under Warnock and was a big part of their promotion winning team. Will be good competition for Turner and Hudson and only 24 years old.

But he played 118 for QPR.. in that promotion winning season too. Only young, seems like a decent acquisition

I think his arrival will influence ben and mark anyway, they were so comfortable last season knowing that nobody could knock them out of the team. Good ol fashioned competition for places is what ups players games i think.

instead of who though?

Most people on here seem to love Turner, although Hudsons been the better of the two (and was by miles on Friday)

A good footballing centre half. Over 140 appearances and only 24. Was a regular for qpr when they got promoted. :ayatollah:

Good cover for Mark and Ben with experience at this level. IMO if we complete this signing we don't need any more, just a freshen up of tactics will do :ayatollah:

Maybe this is who Lakey said would start as cover, but end up breaking into the 1st team???

Cracking signing if we can finalise it!

Good player!!!

Good move yet again Malky!!!

Husdon and Turner will need to be on top of their game cos this lad is reliable.
Does not make a lot of mistakes. You can bet he isnt coming here as cover for anyone

Lets hope he can pass it 5 yards, something neither Turner or Hudson seem capable of doing without looking like a giraffe with an ingrowing toe nail.

Don't know much about him but seems good competition.

He went to Reading on a short term loan (like what we did with Lawrence) so he didn't have that much time to play many games. Will be a good addition to the squad, hopefully will push for a start and give Hudson and Turner that bit of pressure they need to keep their places. :ayatollah:

Sky Sports understands Cardiff City have agreed a fee with Queens Park Rangers for defender Matt Connolly.

The Championship club tabled an offer for the 24-year-old which has met the Rs' valuation, with discussions over personal terms and a medical set to follow.

Former Arsenal trainee Connolly joined QPR in a £1million deal in January 2008 and he has made over 100 appearances for the Loftus Road side.

But he featured only fleetingly last term and spent the second half of the season out on loan with Reading, making six starts in their successful charge to the Championship title.

Connolly looks set to now make a permanent switch back to the second tier of English football, with Cardiff boss Malky Mackay keen to bolster his defensive options.

The versatile defender, who can feature anywhere in the back four, will have his sights set on a third promotion, having achieved the feat with both QPR and the Royals.
